Stephen King Short Story Gets TV Adaptation Summer 2014

Stephen King's work is so prevalent, you can be a huge fan even if you've never picked up a book. Innumerable movies have made it to the big screen, miniseries have gone to television, and recently more of his stories are being adapted to serialized TV. There are Under the Dome and Haven and now another King story is making the jump. The show will be called Grand Central, based on the short story The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates. ABC has given it a straight-to-series order for Summer 2014 and it'll be executive produced by Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn, who both write on Haven. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of this show, which is produced by a new company called Signature. The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates was originally published in 2008 in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction and later collected in King's Just After Sunset. A wife answers the phone one morning to hear the familiar voice of her husband on the other end. However, he died in a plane crash two days earlier. The husband tells his wife about two upcoming events, which helps keep her alive.

Premonition, the after-life, crime solving, the story has all kinds of familiar TV tropes. It's like Person of Interest, if they were getting the information from someone who is dead. That's not to say the show will be specifically that, but it's pretty obvious there are lots of ways to go with the idea.

We'll find out how it works when Grand Central hits ABC is Summer 2014.
