New 'Man Of Steel' Images Show Superman's Human And Heroic Sides

We knew that the guiding principle behind Zack Snyder's new Superman revival Man of Steel was to make the alien superhero make sense in a modern era. And while we don't know precisely how he and his actors and crew have accomplished this, but the first footage from the film does gieve some indication. We see Clark Kent and his alter-ego Superman (Henry Cavill) having what appears to be a crisis of conscience or morality, and doing some serious soul-searching.

New images from the film have hit the web, and while they don't exactly pinpoint more details of Snyder's approach, a couple of his accompanying comments are useful.

Total Film has these images (via io9).

Snyder explained to the mag,

We've tried to make a Superman movie where he does stuff and you go, 'Yeah, if I was Superman, that's what I'd do. Even though he's an alien, he's more relatable, more human.

Cavill added some comments, solidifying that "modern Superman" idea:

This is a Superman for a modern age. It's not betraying anything that Superman is, but it is grounding everything in reality. It's the story of this incredible being who can do incredible things, but whom we can associate with. Because he's gone through troubling stuff and had to make tough choices...

Man of Steel opens on June 14.

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Cavill) is a young twentysomething journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond anyone's imagination. Transported to Earth years ago from Krypton, an advanced alien planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question – Why am I here? Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Costner), Clark soon discovers that having super abilities means making very difficult decisions. But when the world needs stability the most, it comes under attack. Will his abilities be used to maintain peace or ultimately used to divide and conquer? Clark must become the hero known as "Superman," not only to shine as the world's last beacon of hope but to protect the ones he loves.
