Cool Stuff: Jay Shaw's Blue Underground Mondo Gallery Show
For their third gallery show, the Mondo team tapped up and coming artist Jay Shaw (who also goes by Iron Jaiden) to create seventeen posters based on the films of Blue Underground. The resulting show, Don't Go Out Tonight, is a beautiful European influenced ode to the fantastic cult classics of the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties featuring films like Django, Q The Winged Serpent, Emanuelle in America, The New York Ripper and many more.
After the jump, check out images of the entire show and find out how and where you can see it yourself.
Thanks to OMG Posters for these images. Jay Shaw's show will be on display through June 29 at the Mondo Gallery, 4115 Guadalupe St., Austin TX. Gallery hours are noon-6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Visit mondotees.com for more info.
Though the sizes and editions vary, most of the above posters are 18 x 24 inches and in very small editions of 50 or 100. Anything that's not sold out once the show closes at the end of the month will make its way online. Cost is $35 each.
In the poster community, Shaw is one of the most buzzed about rising talents and being the first every Mondo solo gallery artist has only helped that. Even though you'd be hard pressed to find many people who know every one of these movies, or have even seen them, the level of design and thought that went into each piece is very impressive. Each poster is simple and clean but with layers of detailed subtextually displayed. Just look at any of the images and see how what looks like a spur is actually a gun. How a letter is actually a dragon, etc., etc.
Rumor has it the Mondo Gallery will go dark during July so that the crew can get ready for some huge happenings at San Diego Comic-Con involving Olly Moss and possibly a major comic book franchise. And, as always, you'll be able to read all about that right here.
What do you think of Shaw's posters?
