Joss Whedon Says 'The Avengers' Won't Be "Obnoxiously 3D"

Earlier today, Walt Disney Pictures announced that they will be releasing The Avengers in Digital Disney 3D. While I pretty much wrote this off as expected, it seemed to surprise some fans. Whedon talked exclusively with JoBlo, stating that The Avengers won't be "obnoxiously 3D."

"There's no, 'Oh look, we're going to spend 20 minutes going through this tunnel because it's in 3D!' And no one is pointing at the screen the entire time. But it's an action movie. Things tend to hurtle toward the screen anyway." ... "I'm not a big fan of extreme long lens, talky movies – I like to see the space I'm in and relate to it, so 3D kinda fits my aesthetic anyway. And the technology has advanced so far in the past couple years."

The Marvel superhero team-up movie wasn't shot in 3D, which means that the film will go through a post conversion process, much like Thor and Captain America. I'm not a fan of 3D post converted movies — it seems to me that even when you have directors who are planning the movie for 3D and are involved in every step of the 3D process, it doesn't look nearly as good as practically shot 3D footage. That said, post converted 3D footage is starting to look better and better.

You might recall that director Joss Whedon shot the ending credit scene for Thor using 3D camera rigs. He used this test to decide that he did not want to shoo tthe film in 3D — not because he doesn't like 3D, but because of the production issues associated with the extra equipment. But you need to give Marvel credit — they didn't force their filmmaker to shoot the movie in 3D — something that may have happened elsewhere. From what I understand, the studio is letting Whedon make the film the way he wants to make it, and he's every bit involved in the 3D post conversion process.
