Bryan Singer directing The Usual Suspects

Thursday, October 7th 2010 at 7:30pm: The Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA), marking its 30th anniversary, has selected the 30 Most Significant Independent Films™ from around the world produced over the past three decades, and is presenting screenings at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. On October 7th they will present The Usual Suspects with director Bryan Singer in person for a live Q&A. You can buy tickets now on Fandango.

Friday, October 8th 2010 at 7:00pm: Kevin Smith's Smodcastle is hosting a screening of the documentary Winnebago Man, with a Q&A with the filmmakers — Director Ben Steinbauer and Producer Joel Heller in person.

Jack Rebney is the most famous man you've never heard of – after cursing his way through a Winnebago sales video, Rebney's outrageously funny outtakes became an underground sensation and made him an internet superstar. Filmmaker Ben Steinbauer journeys to the top of a mountain to find the recluse who unwittingly became the "Winnebago Man."

Tickets are available on Smodcastle.com for $10.

October 8th at 8:00pm: CineFamily's Silent Movie Theatre presents Japanese Gore Night. The double feature has two Los Angeles premieres: Mutant Girls Squad and Alien Vs. Ninja. Here is more information from the fine folks at Cinefamily:Mutant Girls Squad – 8:00pm

"At 2009's NYAFF, action choreographer/director Tak Sakaguchi (Be A Man! Samurai School), director/special effects genius Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) and cherubic pervert Noboru Iguchi (Robogeisha) got drunk and vowed to make a movie together. For better or worse, this splatter-ific, hyperactive take on X-Men is going to shock, horrify and delight you...Rin is a normal high school girl, but on her Sweet Sixteen, her body starts changing, and a special forces squad busts up her birthday party and kills her guests with booger bullets. It turns out that Rin's one of the reviled mutants (known as Hirukos), who are the latest inferior race slated for extinction. Rin runs, and discovers a resistance movement made up of other mutants: swords shoot out their nipples, chainsaws project from their butts, deformed faces grow on their bellies and metal claws erupt from their wrists — but these deformities are the weapons they'll use to tear down straight society! Close in tone to Tokyo Gore Police's Cronenberg's liberation anthems...Mutant Girls Squad is cheap, tacky and weird. But it's also clear that for all its awkward moments and low budget restrictions, it's a successful melding of these three directors into one giant, bloody robot, [ready] to crush the normals and to gleefully transgress all the boundaries of good taste." — New York Asian Film Festival

Dirs. Noboru Iguchi, Yoshishiro Nishimura & Tak Sakaguchi, 2010, HDCAM, 85 min.

Alien Vs. Ninja – 9:45pm

"That title isn't enough for you?...in the context of crowd-pleasing fun, it far outshines Hollywood's lame summer product." -Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York

"In medieval Japan, no one can hear you scream! Whoever wins — we lose! It came to our planet for the thrill of the hunt but it picked the wrong man! It's an alien, a big disgusting alien who wants to rip out our intestines and tear off our heads. It comes from a planet where everything is goopy and disgusting and the only language it speaks is horrible violence. It's like a drunk redneck with a gun set loose at a wedding reception. This sick extraterrestrial freak even wants to impregnate our species with its hideous jelly babies. It is unstoppable. It is unkillable. It is unbeatable. But it made one mistake: it forgot to make itself ninja-proof. Like some kind of ultra-stupid, ultra-gory version of the Mighty Moronic Power Rangers, Alien Vs. Ninja> is the kind of boneheaded movie that does exactly what it says on the box. There are ninjas, and they fight an alien and by the end so many buckets of gore have been emptied, so many prop swords have been soaked in green alien gunk and so many copyright laws have been violated that the entire Dumb Movies Genre needs to go on vacation!" — New York Asian Film Festival

Dir. Seiji Chiba, 2010, HDCAM, 85 min.

Tickets are $12 available now on the cinefamily website (free for members).

Bryan Singer directing The Usual Suspects

Saturday, October 9 at 5:30pm – 10:00pm: American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre Presents an in-person tribute to Sam Rockwell.

Over the past fifteen years, Sam Rockwell has steadily become one of the most versatile and dynamic actors working in American independent and studio cinema. First gaining major recognition in Tom Dicillo's BOX OF MOONLIGHT in 1996 as an eccentric oddball who dresses up as Davy Crockett, Rockwell went on to nab the leading role in George Clooney's lauded 2002 directorial debut, CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND. Brilliantly undertaking the dual role of a smooth TV executive and CIA hitman in CONFESSIONS (for which he won the Berlinale's Berlin Silver Bear award), Rockwell more than proved his ability to keep an audience spellbound while making his morally problematic character brazenly likeable. Rockwell also impressed in David Gordon's Green's icy drama SNOW ANGELS as an irresponsible but well-intentioned father, and in Duncan Jones' elegant sci-fi tale MOON (again masterfully handling multiple onscreen personas). Recent roles include slimy CEO Justin Hammer in this summer's IRON MAN 2, and a man wrongly convicted of murder in the upcoming drama CONVICTION.
  • BOX OF MOONLIGHT, 1996, Lionsgate Films, 112 min. Dir. Tom DiCillo. John Turturro plays Al Fountain, a depressed engineering foreman who hits the road in search of an idyllic locale that brought him his fondest childhood memories. What he finds there does little to improve his mood, but on the way home he picks up a Davy Crockett-costumed young man with car trouble (Sam Rockwell) who helps him discover that there's more to life than the boredom to which he has become accustomed. Buy Tickets
  • Sam Rockwell in Person! Sneak Preview! CONVICTION, 2010, Fox Searchlight, 107 min. Dir. Tony Goldwyn. Hilary Swank plays Betty Ann Waters, a working mother who puts herself through law school in an attempt to represent her brother (Sam Rockwell), who has been wrongly convicted of murder. Rockwell is at once captivating and heart-wrenching as a man on the brink of despair, having exhausted all his appeals with different public defenders. Discussion following with actor Sam Rockwell. No one will be admitted to this screening without a ticket to BOX OF MOONLIGHT. Tickets will not be sold to this event.
  • Purchase your ticket now on Fandango.

Sunday, October 10th 2010 at 8:00pm: CineFamily at the Silent Movie Theatre is presenting a double feature of Pet Sematary and Pet Sematary II with director Mary Lambert in house for a live Q&A. In recent years she has directed Clubland, The In Crowd, the direct to video sequel Urban Legends: Bloody Mary and most recently The Attic. Tickets are available now for $12 or $8 for members (general admission), $30 (2-person couch), $45 (3-person couch).
