Movie Trailer: Festival Favorite And Presumed Oscar Frontrunner 'The King's Speech'

Tom Hooper's film The King's Speech won the People's Choice Award (aka top prize) at the Toronto Film Festival, and wowed audiences just a week prior at Telluride. Now there's a trailer for the picture, which suggests that the film is every bit the crowd-pleaser it is said to be.

I can't wait to see the performance of Colin Firth as King George VI, because he's getting all the high praise for performance in the film. But based on the trailer it seems to be Geoffrey Rush who is throwing off all the sparks. Which means that, if popular conception is correct (and that's a dangerous thing to accept, but...) Firth's performance is subtle and impressive enough to withstand Rush's more overt fireworks. If that's the case, this film could be a great experience for those who like to see actors sparring and playing.

Plus, the photography looks wonderful. (Some really interesting framing choices here.) And I know a I'm in a film's pocket (or the trailer's, at least) when the lead character can complement Adolf Hitler as he gives a speech and I don't even bristle.

A royal synopsis:

The film is based on the true story of the Queen of England's father and his remarkable friendship with maverick Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue. The King's Speech stars Academy Award nominee Colin Firth as King George VI, who unexpectedly becomes King when his brother Edward abdicates the throne. Academy Award Winner Geoffrey Rush stars as Logue, the man who helps the King find a voice with which to lead the nation into war.

The King's Speech also features Helena Bonham Carter as Queen Elizabeth, Guy Pearce, Derek Jacobi, Timothy Spall and Michael Gambon. The King's Speech opens in theaters on November 24.
