Movie Trailer #3: Megamind
We've already seen a couple trailers for the DreamWorks animated film Megamind, in which Will Ferrell voices a super-villain pitted against his super-heroic arch rival, voiced by Brad Pitt. Now there's a third trailer, which actually shows off some of the film's story, which is based on a sort of twist that the previous clips didn't even suggest.
Megamind has gone through a couple of title changes, and possibly a story change or two in the last year and a half. This trailer still has the jokey 'Incredibles + Superman' vibe of the first couple trailers, and there are some really nice small details, like the prison for the 'criminally gifted.' The fish sidekick is still pretty cute, and Ferrell seems to be doing a spot-on job of voicing the title character.
But as we see more of the story, which appears here to have been lightened a bit from the first reports (which might also have deliberately omitted some detail) I wonder how it will escape seeming like a clone of The Incredibles. Obviously it's jumping off from a different point, but there are still seem to be a great many similarities. Oh, who am I kidding? It's a DreamWorks animated family film. I don't think they really care.
Here's the current synopsis:
Megamind is the most brilliant super–villain the world has ever known...and the least successful. Over the years, he has tried to conquer Metro City in every imaginable way – Each attempt, a colossal failure thanks to the caped superhero known as "Metro Man," until the day Megamind actually defeats him in the throes of one of his botched evil plans. Suddenly, the fate of Metro City is threatened when a new villain arrives and chaos runs rampant, leaving everyone to wonder: Can the world's biggest "mind" actually be the one to save the day?
