Trent Reznor Is Scoring The Social Network

If the recently released teaser trailer for David Fincher's The Social Network didn't turn your crank, maybe this news will: According to an announcement on the Nine Inch Nails' website news feed (via Pitchfork), Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are writing the score for the film.

Unsurprisingly, Reznor wasn't immediately drawn to the idea of a film based on the founding of Facebook, but when he read Sorkin's script, he changed his mind:

I've always loved David's work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story. When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned. Atticus Ross and I have been on a creative roll so I asked him if he wanted to work on this with me and we signed on.

The two are still working on the score, but Reznor hints at the release process for the eventual soundtrack:

[W]e're looking forward to the next phase – distilling the large amount of music we've written for this down to a satisfying record (or two). The film opens Oct 1 in the US with the record likely available a couple of weeks ahead of that.

Also, for those interested, Reznor calls the film "really fucking good. And dark!"

This will not be Reznor's first experience in the movie soundtrack world. Reznor fans might recall that he produced the soundtracks to Lost Highway, and Natural Born Killers, not to mention the mostly-ambient-noise soundtrack for the video game Quake. Based solely on the teaser trailer for The Social Network, which I wasn't that impressed by, Reznor's score may be the most hardcore thing about the film.
