Splice Trailer #2: More Flash Cuts, More Creature Glimpses

We've already seen one trailer (and a couple clips) from Vincenzo Natali's Sundance hit Splice, which Warner Bros. will release this summer. Now there is a second trailer that shows a little more of the story and amps up the tension as Sarah Polley and Adrien Brody create a new life form.

Releasing a film like this in the summer is a risky move, and I hope it pays off. Appropriately, this is the sort of trailer you have to cut for a summer release. It's designed to suggest a monster movie that would fit well among some of the other big summer films, but in fact I think Splice is a lot weirder than that.

As David said at Sundance, "I was expecting a standard-issue monster horror film. What I can state confidently is that Splice is definitely not that...Splice is less a horror film and more a quasi-serious exploration into the implications of playing God."

In short, I love that a movie like this is getting such a wide release. I haven't yet seen it, so I can't comment directly on the film. But everything I know from those I trust who have seen it suggests that this is an unusual film that lucked into having a much broader platform to reach an audience than would usually be the case. And that is fantastic.

The synopsis:

Superstar genetic engineers Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) specialize in splicing together DNA from different animals to create incredible new hybrids. Now they secretly conduct their own experiments. The result is Dren, an amazing, strangely beautiful creature that exceeds their wildest dreams, until she threatens to become their worst nightmare.
