Benicio Del Toro Joins Sofia Coppola's Somewhere
Update: Movieline has confirmed that Benicio is in the film, and that his role "involves a brief run-in with Dorff's actor at the historic hotel." So it is just a cameo.
Has Benicio del Toro joined the cast of Sofia Coppola's new movie Somewhere? The Los Angeles power pop band Rooney reveals in a new blog post that they filmed a cameo for the film (yes, the movie is already in production) but also mentioned that Benicio is one of the stars of the movie.
"We spent the day at the world famous Chateau Marmont on the set of the new Sofia Coppola film, Somewhere. The movie stars Stephen Dorf and Benicio Del Torro. Though Ned and Louis lost a last minute coin toss to appear in the film, keep you eyes peeled for Matt, Robert, and Tayor. Rumor has it Matt may even have some off the cuff improv."
For those who don't know, the band's lead singer Robert Schwartzman, is the cousin of Sofia and younger brother of Jason. I would assume that the band did not mix up del Toro with Chris Pontius. No word on how large Benicio's involvement in the film might be. Who knows, it might just be a cameo? I remember their were rumors in the gossip mags that Benicio and Scarlett Johnansson (star of Coppola's Lost in Translation) got caught having sex in the elevator at the Chateau after the Oscars. It's possible that he might be making a cameo appearance to play off this widely circulated rumor?
Sofia's fourth film is a dramedy which centers on Hollywood's iconic Chateau Marmont, the hotel of choice of many tabloid-friendly celebrities. The story is about a "bad-boy actor" (Stephen Dorff) who gets an unexpected visit from his 11-year-old daughter (Elle Fanning), and is forced to reexamine his life. Coppola has called it "an intimate story set in contemporary Los Angeles," while Focus Features CEO James Schamus describes it as having all the "witty, moving and empathetic qualities that characterize all [of Sofia's] work." The only other bit of announced casting is that Jackass star Chris Pontius plays Sammy, the best friend of Dorff's character.
