ShoWest: Sherlock Holmes Is Funny? Linda Hamilton Appears In Terminator Salvation!
A trailer for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Homes premiered this morning at ShoWest. This is definitely not the Sherlock Holmes you've ever seen before. I was surprised at how comical the footage was. It felt a little like the humor of Disney's Pirates of the Carribbean films. Fans of Ritchie might be interested to know that the director's stylish cinematography was definitely intact. During a sequence showing the barenuckle pitfight, Holmes' punches are executed in a slow motion style reminiscent of the video game Fight Night. And while the film isn't set in modern day, the trailer had a very contemporary in-you-face edit. Of course, I'm not sure if this was just a trailer cut for ShoWest, or if it might be an early version of the actual theatrical trailer. Some people commented on Robert Downey Jr's accent, which wasn't too believable, but I'm sure in the context of the movie it won't really matter.
The presentation also included extended trailers for The Hangover, Terminator Salvation and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I've seen so much of Terminator between the various roadshows, on set sizzle reel, and comic con presentation, but I'm still impressed every new pass. The most notable thing about the new extended trailer is a shot of either John Connor or young Kyle Reese holding a photo, THE photo, of Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor from Terminator.
Before presenting the trailer for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Warner Bros head Alan Horn joked that he hopes fans can forgive him for moving the film to July, and that "we got a few emails about that one." The footage was incredible, as is to be expected. A lot of really cool visuals which I won't even attempt to disservice by describing.
As the keynote began, Horn made another funny joke. He noted that the large auditorium was very full, and that if every person in the room had paid $10 to see Watchmen, the film might have performed better. I'm paraphrasing, of course, but it was pretty funny. But I'm surprised that he would make that joke.
