Is The Veronica Mars Movie Dead?
Last we heard, Rob Thomas was preparing to pitch his treatment for a Veronica Mars big screen movie to executive producer Joel Silver and Warner Bros. So what's the update? Do you really want to know? It doesn't sound good... Thomas tells the New York Post that "while the pitch went well and I don't think the movie's dead, right now it's looking depressing."
"I think honestly if we would have had the pitch ready a year earlier, it would be a go project. The hope that we would get a quick greenlight didn't materialize. This is the least optimistic I've felt in a while."
And worse yet, Thomas is already talking about the project in past tense while describing what we might have seen.
"If we were going to do a movie, I would want to put Wallace and Logan and Mac and Weevil in it. We would have picked up just prior to Veronica's graduation, it would have been the college years."
I have a feeling that we haven't heard the last of this project, and eventually things will come together ... but will it be too late? How old could Veronica be before the concept just turns into your typical detective mystery? Part of the appeal of the show to me was the unique spin of setting the detective story in the world of High School and College. And as much as fans are craving for another fix, I'm not sure the story of a 30-year-old Veronica Mars might be all that interesting.
