Star Trek In IMAX
FirstShowing is reporting that JJ Abrams' Star Trek will be converted for IMAX theaters when it is released on May 8th 2009. But with Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian, also an IMAX release, due only two weeks later, Trek won't have too much time on the huge screen. And I don't expect any special features to be announced (for instance, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is expected to have more than 20 minutes in 3D, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen shot some action sequences using IMAX cameras) but Trek might be worth seeing in IMAX regardless. Especially with the big space battles which might out-Star Wars Star Wars.
I'm usually not a fan of the IMAX up-conversions, and in a post Dark Knight world, it almost seems like a rip off, but I have been reading up on the process and I'm starting to drink the kool aid. The up-conversion process eliminates additional film grain which is common in film print reproduction, providing an image much closer to the original negative. Also, the IMAX sound system is obviously much better. Just don't sit too close.
Discuss: Will you see Star Trek in IMAX even though it doesn't have any super added value features?
