Witchblade Movie Poster Revealed
The big screen adaptation of Top Cow's Witchblade begins production in September 2008, and Platinum Studios and Arclight Films have launched an official teaser website at Witchblade2009.com, and released an official teaser movie poster. I'm not sure what to think about this as I've never read the comic book series.
The original Top Cow comic book series has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide since it was created in 1995. It also spawned a TNT television series which ran for two seasons beginning in 2000, and a Japanese Anime television show in Japan in 2006. The story follows a specially chosen female who comes into possession of "a supernatural, sentient artifact with immense destructive and protective powers" called the Witchblade. The jewel-encrusted gauntlet gives the wearer extraordinary powers. The feature length theatrical live-action film will take a "more horror-based approach."
"It's not a gore-fest, but certainly more horrific than the TV series. With the supernatural elements this is pretty easy to do," Executive Producers Matt Hawkins told Newsarama. "The live action film will be more in line with the comics than anything else." ... "One of the great things about the Witchblade is that the basic mythology and origin allows us to do pretty much just about anything we want."
IMDb lists Battlestar Galactica producer/director Michael Rymer attached to the project, although I haven't seen his involvement confirmed officially. The plan right now is to release the film in late 2009.
