I haven’t yet had a chance to see 44 Inch Chest, the film from Sexy Beast screenwriters Louis Mellis and David Scinto directed by British commercial helmer Malcolm Venville. The cast is enough to get me really interested: Ray Winstone, Ian McShane, Tom Wilkinson and John Hurt, among others. The score, by Angelo Badalamenti and Massive Attack, sounds promising, too. Reviews have been middling as the picture hits festivals and general release in Australia, but I’m not going to let that stop me.
Especially after seeing these two little clips, featuring McShane and Wilkinson as they describe recent experiences with love and dating. I don’t know how these fit into the film, which actually makes them more enjoyable. They’re just clips of two great actors doing their thing before the camera.
Twitch has both clips, and I’d expect to see a couple more soon, as they appear to be emerging at a steady pace to vaguely promote the film. The basic plot is “A British gangster (Ray Winstone) and his friends take revenge on his cheating wife by kidnapping her young French lover.” But the films’ official website (maybe NSFW, or maybe just weird for work) seems to be some sort of mocked-up dating website seeking to hook guys up with married women, so that gives you some idea of additional story points, and puts these clips into some perspective.
Beyond that, I just love watching McShane and Wilkinson at work. I’d love to hear McShane get even more voice work, too — he’s got one of the best voices going. Someone in the comments at Twich hopes to hear him as Smaug in the Guillermo del Toro Hobbit films, and I can heartily endorse that idea. It’s a fancasting pipe dream, sure, but not really far-fetched at all.
