You may or may not remember that Kellan Lutz (Twilight) was announced a while back as the “star” of a new mo-cap animated version of Edgar Rice Burroughs‘ pulp hero Tarzan. I didn’t remember, at least until I saw a flash of the trailer a couple days ago, and the news break was just back in May. Now the full trailer — sans English titles — is available to give us a look at Tarzan 3D. And it is… well, it’s a new screen version of Tarzan, and other than that it is difficult to get much of an idea. Check out the digital vine-swinger below.
No word on when (or if) we’ll see this in the US, but I can’t say I’m too concerned about it either way. A traditional Tarzan is well and good, but I’d like to see what this offers that other versions haven’t. The mo-cap work looks good, but the animation that overlays it falls somewhere between deliberately out of date and simply behind the curve. I can’t tell if the look is a choice, or simply the way things turned out. Regardless, whenever I see classic pulp transferred to the big screen I always want something with just a bit more edge than this seems to have. I’m sure others feel differently, and maybe this will turn out to be a faithful adaptation of Burroughs that will please fans of his work. [Animatie]
