xXx Return of Xander Cage trailer

I’d say “I can’t believe they made another xXx movie,” but in a year where we’ve gotten sequels for everything from Independence Day: Resurgence to Snow White and the Huntsman, of freaking course they made another xXx movie. After all, Vin Diesel is bigger now than he’s ever been, but even he can’t make another Fast and the Furious movie every year. Why not squeeze him into a different action-adventure in the meantime?

Directed by D.J. Caruso, xXx: Return of Xander Cage brings the extreme-sports-enthusiast-turned-spy out of retirement for a dangerous new assignment. Samuel L. Jackson is back as his handler, Augustus Gibbons, and the supporting cast includes Ruby RoseNina DobrevDonnie YenTony Jaa, and Kris Wu. CinemaCon

We’re back in Las Vegas at CinemaCon, the annual gathering of movie theater exhibitors. As you probably know by now, theater owners from around the nation gather to, among other things, watch presentations from all of the major movie studios previewing their film slates for the upcoming year and beyond. The opening night presentation was Paramount Pictures, which came to Vegas to promote Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Ben-Hur, the first teaser trailer for the Ring franchise film Rings, the first footage from Tom Cruise’s sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Robert Zemeckis’ spy thriller Allied, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, and a very early look at Baywatch starring The Rock and Zac Efron.

But the two biggest surprises involved Prisoners/Sicario/Blade Runner 2 filmmaker Denis Villeneuve adaptation of Story Of Your Life and the shocking lack of any Star Trek Beyond preview despite having Simon Pegg and JJ Abrams in town and on stage for an award celebration. The new Villeneuve film seems like a smart science fiction film, think Contact meets Close Encounters of a Third Kind. Hit the jump to watch a video blog reaction talking about all the clips shown at the presentation.

XXX Diesel header

Back in 2002, Vin Diesel was at the top of his game. The Fast and the Furious, Pitch Black and a high-octane action film called xXx were all big hits. However, out of the three potential franchises, Diesel only came back for the Pitch Black film The Chronicles of Riddick and it bombed. He refused to come back for a sequel to xXx in 2005, so Ice Cube took the job and Diesel had a few off years. But with his return to the Fast and Furious films in 2009 (after also skipping almost 2 installments to that franchise), Diesel once again found himself at the top of the world.

Using the success of the Fast and Furious sequels as a jumping-off point, Diesel recently rebooted his Pitch Black character with Riddick, and is now apparently looking to do the same with Xander Cage, the star of xXx. Read More »

Xander Cage

Is there really a demand for a second xXx sequel? Last year it was announced that Michael Ferris and John Brancato (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, The Net, Catwoman) were to write the screenplay for XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, the third film in the series which would re-team director Rob Cohen and actor Vin Diesel. But when Cohen dropped out to ruin a possible much better film direct Medieval, we assumed that the film had fallen back into development hell. Not so…

Michael Ferris and John Brancato are in early talks to write the screenplay for XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, the third film in the series which re-teams hack director Rob Cohen and robot turned actor Vin Diesel. Ferris and Brancato made a name for themselves with David Fincher’s The Game, but are probably best known for Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, The Net, Catwoman, Primeval and Terminator Salvation. Yeah, not exactly a good track record, not that there was any hopes for a third XXX film in the first place.
On the other hand, at least it can’t be any worse than xXx 2: The Next Level.

In quick defense of Terminator Salvation, Ferris and Brancato will likely only get story credit on the final film with some sort of screenwriting credit going to David C Wilson and Jonathan Nolan.

xXx: The Death of Xander Cage

The Pitch: A couple days ago, it was announced that Vin Diesel is in talks to return for a third xXx film titled xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. /Film reader Karel R alerted me to this short film titled xXx: The Death of Xander Cage, which was apparently a special feature on the director’s cut DVD. It’s almost unbelievable. The film is supposed to tie up loose ends between the first and second films, and explain how Vin Diesel’s character met his ultimate demise. The funniest part is the whole thing was shot without Diesel’s involvement.
