pacific rim uprising featurette

With all the inspiration that the Pacific Rim franchise draws from Japan, it’s no surprise that Tokyo Comic-Con would get an exclusive featurette chock full of new footage of the upcoming Pacific Rim Uprising.

pacific rim crossover

The movie franchise that started as a love letter to the kaiju monster genre may end up battling some of the OG kaiju in future crossover movies, if Pacific Rim Uprising director Steven S. DeKnight gets his wish.

The sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s affectionate homage to the mecha anime and monster movie genres that sprung out of Japan, Pacific Rim Uprising also happens to hail from the same studio that is currently spearheading Godzilla and King Kong’s cinematic MonsterVerse, Legendary Pictures. So it would not be too difficult for a crossover between the three properties to take place. Because all we’re really missing from the Godzilla and Kong films are giant robots beating them up.

pacific rim uprising breakdown 83

The Pacific Rim Uprising trailer dropped at New York Comic-Con this weekend to mixed reactions from fans of Guillermo del Toro‘s 2013 original. With a brand new cast led by John Boyega, a brand new director in Steven S. DeKnight, and shiny brand new robots to fight a bigger apocalypse than the last time around, it certainly feels somewhat divorced from the original. So let’s take a deep dive with a Pacific Rim Uprising trailer breakdown, where we’ll break down the trailer frame-by-frame, and find out exactly what is going on 10 years after the events of Pacific Rim.

Guillermo del Toro films ranked

Pacific Rim is a big ‘ol popcorn movie that shines with Guillermo del Toro‘s personality. After establishing a vibrant near-future in which Jaegers and Kaiju clash with glee, del Toro bowed out of directing the sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising. For a while, especially when the project struggled to the green light, del Toro was still onboard to direct, but scheduling issues led to his departure.

The producer is still very much involved in Uprising, but of course, Steven S. DeKnight (Daredevil) eventually stepped in to direct the sequel. Find out why Guillermo del Toro left Pacific Rim 2 below.

Mark your calendars: John Boyega will be re-cancelling the apocalypse in 2018. Universal Pictures and Legendary have just officially set a release date for Pacific Rim 2, which seemed like a pipe dream three years ago when the original Pacific Rim failed to make much of an impression at the box office. Pacific Rim 2 director

The past couple of years have been a real roller coaster ride for Pacific Rim fans. The film’s limp U.S. box office dimmed hopes of a sequel, before a strong overseas performance got Universal interested again. A release date was set and everything seemed on track for more jaeger vs. kaiju fights… and then Universal got cold feet and put the whole thing on hold. Through it all, Guillermo del Toro insisted Pacific Rim 2 was not dead, and now it looks like his optimism is finally panning out.

Legendary Pictures has hired Spartacus creator and Daredevil season 1 Steven S. DeKnight to helm the sci-fi action sequel, while del Toro will remain on board as a producer. Universal Pictures is still set to distribute.
