2017 Saturn Awards Nominations

If you’re one of those people who gets frustrated because the Academy Awards don’t nominate the science fiction, fantasy, and horror films you love for Best Picture or any of the other categories, then the Saturn Awards are for you.

The 2017 Saturn Award nominations have just been announced, and not only did Rogue One: A Star Wars Story come out on top with 11 nominations, but all those comic book movies that never had a chance in hell of getting a Best Picture nomination landed a bunch of nods. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Doctor Strange, Suicide Squad, Deadpool, Captain America: Civil War and even X-Men: Apocalypse all received nominations.

But this isn’t just a comic book movie celebration, because plenty of other genre films landed nominations too. Star Trek Beyond, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and 10 Cloverfield Lane are just some of the other films that ended up getting nominated for awards, too.

star trek beyond gag reel

Star Trek Beyond was one of my favorite movies of the summer and a return to form after the disappointing Star Trek Into Darkness. The film didn’t exactly light the box office on fire, but did manage to capture the essence of what makes Trek the finest science fiction series of all time while also delivering all of the expected action. I’m not sure if a fourth film with this cast will ever actually materialize, but if this is the end of the Kelvin timeline, it’s a good way to go out.

Since the film is hitting Blu-ray and DVD early next month, consider the arrival of this Star Trek Beyond gag reel to be right on schedule.

Matt Ferguson Artwork - Star Trek Beyond

For collectors of pop culture artwork, there’s a treasure trove of fine prints available to buy every single week. It’s enough to empty one’s bank account over and over again. This week we have some stunning new artwork from artists Matt Taylor, Matt Ryan Tobin and Matt Ferguson. No, they haven’t all joined forces for some kind of Matt-centric gallery, but they just happen to have some great pieces paying tribute to Tarzan of the Apes, A Princess of Mars The Fly and Star Trek Beyond.

Check out all of the new Matt Taylor, Matt Ryan Tobin and Matt Ferguson artwork after the jump. Read More »

2016 summer movie recap

The summer movie season is over and you know what that means – it’s time to hand out pointless imaginary awards to the best, worst, and weirdest films of the past four months!

Welcome to the 2016 Summer Blockbuster Awards, which is like the Oscars if the Oscars only covered a specific release window, were decided by one person, and were also really dumb. Here’s how this works: I have created 24 categories, from “Best Performance” to “Movie Most in Need of a Hug” and have awarded one winner and one runner-up. At the name of these awards imply, the focus here is on wide releases that arrived between May and August of this year. So while you really should go out of your way to see indie gems like Swiss Army Man and Don’t Think Twice, they won’t be the focus here. Got it? Good. Let’s just dive right in.

Be warned there are spoilers ahead for some of this summer’s films.

Star Trek Beyond shows a new side of the enterprise crew. While J.J. Abrams‘ Trek films are very dedicated to Kirk and Spock’s relationship, Justin Lin‘s sequel breathes more life into the supporting characters. Thanks to screenwriters Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, they have more time to shine, especially “Bones” McCoy. The good doctor is played by Karl Urban, who almost passed on his third outing as the character.

Below, learn why we almost didn’t see Karl Urban in Star Trek Beyond.
