Are there too many villains in The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Director Marc Webb knows you might be concerned that this sequel has too many characters for its own good. A common complaint about Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 was that the film featured too many villains, and was consequently unfocused and unable to do justice to any of them. So with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 having not only Electro as the core baddie, but also the Rhino and some version of the Green Goblin, fans have wondered if this film would follow the same path.

Briefly: The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb is something of a golden boy at Sony right now, as he’s set to continue with the Spidey franchise through at least the series’ third installment. But he’s casting his eye beyond that, and naturally looking for projects outside the superhero realm.
So Marc Webb is now attached to the movie adaptation of the upcoming spy thriller book Cold Comfort at Fox. The movie rights for the book were just sold to the studio. Cold Comfort, aka How to Catch a Russian Spy, is a memoir by an unnamed former spy, being co-written by Ellis Henican. The book is about “an American civilian turned self-taught spy, who worked with the FBI to bring down a Russian intelligence agent on American soil.” [Deadline]
Does Sony rely too heavily on Spider-Man, or not heavily enough? In commercials, trailers, and sizzle reels, it feels like we’ve already seen 10 or 15 minutes of Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But the sequel, which opens May 2, is jam-packed with characters and a new international trailer yet again proves we ain’t seen nothing yet. It runs three minutes and features a very good portion of new footage, most of which focuses on Jamie Foxx‘s Electro, a primary figure in the story who’s been an afterthought in much of the more recent promotions. Between all the trailers, TV spots, images, viral sites, and Times Square drop-ins, you’d think we knew everything there was to know about Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But there are still a few secrets that Marc Webb has managed to hold onto during that marketing blitz, and one of them is whom exactly B.J. Novak would be playing.
