Today’s TV Bits is a severely mixed bag, as we get updates on two returning shows and a few other shows that are dead or close to it. After the jump:
- NBC confirms that Community will be back in the spring
- AMC sets a return date for Mad Men
- Showtime releases the season premieres of Shameless and Californication online
- Fox cancels Allen Gregory, begins developing new late-night animated block
- Fox’s Fringe seems likely to get cancelled
- Fox decides against Glee spin-off, but devises a plan to keep its biggest stars on the show.

The cast of Tom Hooper‘s Les Miserables is already plenty star-studded, with Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, and up-and-comer Eddie Redmayne all signed on at present — but as anyone familiar with the book or stage musical can attest, that still leaves several juicy roles remaining to be filled.
One of the most notable is the part of Éponine, perhaps best remembered for her big solo number “On My Own,” but that could change soon. According to a new rumor, Scarlett Johansson, Evan Rachel Wood, Lea Michele, and Taylor Swift are competing for the role, though a decision has yet to be made. More details after the jump.

A new poster and trailer have dropped for New Year’s Eve, Garry Marshall‘s follow-up to his commercial hit Valentine’s Day. The film appears to be essentially just Valentine’s Day with warmer clothing and some casting changes. Once again, Marshall brings together lots of big-name celebs for a collection of interlinked love stories that revolve around the holiday name-checked in the title.
This time around, the stars are Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Hector Elizondo, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Katherine Heigl, Josh Duhamel, Til Schweiger, Lea Michele, Zac Efron, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vergara, Alyssa Milano, Hilary Swank, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ice Cube, Seth Meyers, John Stamos, Jon Bon Jovi, John Lithgow, Ludacris, and Ryan Seacrest, who all converge in or around Times Square on New Year’s Eve. Sad as I am to see summer go, there is something I’m really looking forward to about the coming months, and that is the advent of the television’s regular season. After a long summer away from my imaginary friends in Pawnee, Greendale, and Lima, I’m eager to check back in and see what the new premieres have to offer. Hit the jump to see:

The first trailer has dropped for New Year’s Eve, Garry Marshall‘s not-quite-sequel to his 2010 hit Valentine’s Day. If you’ve ever seen Valentine’s Day, you probably know what to expect: big-name celebrities, a bunch of disparate storylines, and people crowing about how goddamn magical the holiday in question is.
This time around, many mini-plotlines converge in New York City on the titular holiday, and the cast consists of Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Hector Elizondo, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Katherine Heigl, Josh Duhamel, Til Schweiger, Lea Michele, Zac Efron, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vergara, Alyssa Milano, Hilary Swank, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Abigail Breslin, Ice Cube, Seth Meyers, John Stamos, Jon Bon Jovi, John Lithgow, Ludacris, and Ryan Seacrest. The multi-thread romcom New Year’s Eve (a sorta spin-off from last year’s Valentine’s Day) has quite the cast. So far Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Biel, Sarah Jessica Parker, Halle Berry, Zac Efron, Lea Michele and more
are all set to get paid for doing a couple weeks of work on the film.

While Sam Raimi is working on explaining how the Wizard got to Oz, there’s another film in production that’ll tell the story of what happens after Dorothy left. That film is called Dorothy of Oz and it’s a 3D animated sequel to the 1939 original about Dorothy being transported back to help a new group of misfits find the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion in order to defeat an evil Jester who wants to take over Oz. Directed by Daniel St. Pierre, the film sports a start studded voice cast including Lea Michele, Martin Short, Dan Aykroyd, Kelsey Grammer, Jim Belushi, Oliver Platt and Patrick Stewart and is reportedly scheduled for release in April 2012. We’ve already seen some character sketches, but now a bunch of concept art has surfaced that gives us a good idea of what to expect from the film. We’ve got the photos and more after the jump. In part because of the runaway success of Alice in Wonderland, a story like The Wizard of Oz is hot stuff in Hollywood right now. So there are loads of Oz-related projects in the works: Disney’s Oz, the Great and Powerful, to be directed by Sam Raimi with Robert Downey, Jr. starring; the Polish Brothers’ Oz; a Wizard of Oz sequel called Surrender Dorothy potentially to be directed by Drew Barrymore; and the animated Dorothy of Oz.
We’ve now got a set of character sketches for the animated film, which at the very least demonstrate that it won’t be subject to any unsavory ‘dark fantasy’ whims. For that reason alone I’m willing to think about giving it a shot. Read More »
