'Legends Of Oz: Dorothy's Return' Trailer: The Emerald City Gets Animated

It's been nearly seventy-five years since MGM released The Wizard of Oz, and over a century since L. Frank Baum first published the book it was based on, but the story is showing no signs of losing its power. Last year saw the release of a big-budget prequel, Disney's Oz the Great and Powerful, and next year we're getting an (unrelated) animated sequel called Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return.

Lea Michele voices the Kansas-born heroine, who — as the title suggests — comes back to Oz and finds herself caught in another colorful adventure. She re-teams with her old friends the Scarecrow (Dan Aykroyd), the Tin Man (Kelsey Grammer), and the no-longer-cowardly Lion (Jim Belushi) to fight a new foe, an angry Jester (Martin Short) who wants control of Oz. Legend of Oz: Dorothy's Return is based on the 1989 book Dorothy of Oz, a sequel to Baum's original novel by his great-grandson Roger Stanton Baum. Megan Hilty, Hugh Dancy, Oliver Platt, Patrick Stewart, and Bernadette Peters also lend their voices to the animated feature, which lands in theaters May 9, 2014.

In LEGENDS OF OZ: DORTOHY'S RETURN, Dorothy returns to Kansas to find it devastated by the tornado that had whisked her away to Oz. The home she has been so desperate to return to is severely damaged, and the townspeople are packing up and moving out. But shortly after arriving in Kansas, Dorothy is magically transported back to Oz.

She finds out that Oz is in trouble, and the people there need her help. Dorothy's old friends – the Scarecrow, Tin Man and the formerly Cowardly Lion – have disappeared and Oz is in a state of decay. As Dorothy journeys to find her friends, she encounters a number of new companions and problems including a man made of marshmallows who can't think for himself; a china doll princess whose bossiness is a cover for her fragility; and a tugboat with as many personalities as he has pieces. Dorothy must help this odd group band together against a new villain – a wicked Jester who thinks all of Oz should be under his control.
