One of the complaints many people have about the pop culture poster scene is that the same handful of movies keep getting posters. It’s a valid argument. Massively popular films like Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, The Big Lebowski and Kill Bill do have infinitely more posters than their smaller counterparts. The reasons, though, should be obvious. One, these are very popular films with huge fan bases. The more prints that are released, the more fans who can get them. Second, if you don’t love one artist’s interpretation, maybe another will really strike you.

Two films undoubtedly on that list are Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. Mondo alone has done about a half dozen posters for Sam Raimi’s trilogy and there are three new ones on sale tomorrow. However, like I said above, these are unique and beautiful takes on the films by artists Randy Ortiz, Richey Beckett and Tom Whalen. Each is radically different from every other take out there and will please fans new and old alike. Look at the new Mondo Evil Dead posters below.  Read More »

Sorry fans. No matter what Bruce Campbell says, Bruce Campbell says don’t get too excited about Army of Darkness 2. After the actor was recently quoted saying “Yes,” the film will happen, he has now backtracked on that. Campbell now says despite the “random comments” that slip out of his mouth sometimes, the film is not a reality until we hear something from the production company, it’s given a release date or a start date. And, as of yet, none of that has happened.

He also doesn’t seem too hopeful about a sequel to this year’s Evil Dead remake, talking about how director Fede Alvarez (himself a subject of uncertainty regarding the franchise) has moved on to other things.

Listen to Campbell’s quotes below.

Evil Dead (6)

UPDATE: Unsurprisingly, Fede Alvarez said the below quotes were “lost in translation” and he still is attached to the film. The original story follows with the update at the bottom.

This year’s release of the Evil Dead remake breathed new life into a revered, but seemingly complete franchise. Suddenly, star Bruce Campbell and director turned producer Sam Raimi were talking about new sequels and Fede Alvarez, who directed the bloody remake, was planning his own sequel that would dovetail with what came before. Evil Dead fans were in speculation heaven as it seemed likely Ash would meet Mia at a cabin in the woods.

Months have passed though and while the original camp, Campbell and Raimi, are still adamant their sequelArmy of Darkness 2 – is happening, the other film might not. Rodo Sayagues, co-writer of this year’s Evil Dead, now says he and Alvarez left the sequel months ago. Read More »

Jason Edmiston - Evil Dead 2 header

The two leaders in pop culture art are both releasing excellent new prints on Thursday. First up is Mondo, which is finally releasing an awesome Army of Darkness poster, made by Randy Ortiz for a screening that took place a few weeks back. They’re pairing that with a brand new Evil Dead 2 poster by Jason Edmiston.

Then there’s Gallery 1988, which still has its awesome Bad Robot exhibit on display. With Star Trek Into Darkness coming soon the gallery is releasing a brand new print by Rhys Cooper, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch‘s villainous John Harrison. Check them all out below. Read More »

evil-dead-1

In my review of Evil Dead, this year’s remake of Sam Raimi‘s career-making 1981 film, I mentioned that this movie might actually exist in the same timeline as Raimi’s movies. It isn’t locked down in the film that such a thing is the case, but it is suggested.

Recently, original Evil Dead star Bruce Campbell went a lot farther, saying at a post-screening Q&A that plans for sequels to both this new Evil Dead series and Raimi’s own movies might eventually merge the two storylines. We couldn’t confirm his quote at the time. At today’s WonderCon panel for the remake, director Fede Alvarez confirmed the ambition to top off his own Evil Dead 2 and Sam Raimi’s Army of Darkness 2 with a film that brings the storylines together. Briefly: You can head to this link for our review of Fede Alvarez‘s Evil Dead remake, in the wake of its premiere at SXSW. But we have an associated note to present along with the review. During the post-show Q&A last night the director and co-writer of the new installment of the horror series said “I guess this is an official announcement: We are already writing Evil Dead 2.”

Bruce Campbell, star and producer of the original, and a producer on this remake, chimed in to say that a trilogy is being imagined.

Update: Alvarez has talked a bit more about the plans for his own Evil Dead sequel. Read More »

VOTD: Edgar Wright’s 1993 Mash-Up ‘Gun Fetish’

We post a fair amount of montages here on /Film, but this one’s extra special. Back in 1993, well before the days of Final Cut Pro, a 19-year-old Edgar Wright holed himself up in an editing suite for several weekends to put together this montage, “Gun Fetish.” The clips are pulled from VHS tapes, which explains the low quality. Even so, it’s apparent that Wright has an excellent sense of rhythm and timing, as well as real affection for the films he’d go on to reference and parody in work like Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World. Watch it after the jump. Be forewarned — the video is, as Wright puts it, “a little NSFW and spoiler heavy.”
