Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy, and Richard Linklater have been terribly wishy-washy about the second Before Sunrise sequel over the past year. Hawke was the first to let slip that something was in the works, but the trio immediately backpedaled by insisting that nothing was set in stone.

Then we got word that shooting would start this summer, but none of the three said a peep as June and July went by. Last week, Greek papers noted that Hawke had been spotted actually shooting the film — now rumored to be titled Before Midnight — in Messinia, but Hawke quickly clarified that they were only at the writing stage.

Today we’re getting yet another reversal, as it turns out Hawke’s been somewhat less than forthcoming. In fact, a new report says that not only have cameras started rolling, Linklater’s actually wrapped Before Midnight already. You can even see the first image after the jump.

Last fall, Ethan Hawke spilled the beans on another potential Before Sunrise sequel, telling a French publication that he, co-star Julie Delpy, and director Richard Linklater had plans to get started on a script. But updates have been slow to trickle down since then. All three have been careful to emphasize that nothing’s set in stone, and until Hawke let slip in June that the plan was to shoot this summer we had only the vaguest idea of when cameras might roll.

Now we’re approaching the end of summer, and Hawke, Delpy, and Linklater are still keeping quiet about their plans. Newspapers in Greece, on the other hand, have not. According to local publications, Hawke is on set in the southwestern area of Pelponnese, shooting the film rumored to be titled Before Midnight. Mull over the details after the jump.

Ethan Hawke was the first to give away the possibility of a Before Sunrise / Before Sunset follow-up during an interview last fall, but since then Hawke, star Julie Delpy, and director Richard Linklater have been careful to avoid saying anything too solid on the subject. Deply would only affirm that they were “thinking about it” when asked about the possible project at Sundance, while Linklater denied that there was anything “concrete” when he was posed the question this spring.

But apparently something‘s been brewing between the three of them while we haven’t been looking, because now Hawke has let slip that the plan is to shoot this summer. Read his comments after the jump.

This one’s too good to hide after the break, so let’s begin this roundup of sequel news with a killer quote from Nicolas Cage. The actor often seems to go off the deep end with respect to movie roles, and one of his crazier ones in recent memory is the Neil LaBute remake of The Wicker Man. There’s no way to sum up the madness of the film; if you haven’t seen it, get that sucker now.

During a recent web chat with Empire, Cage was asked about revisiting old characters, and he said

I would like to hook up with one of the great Japanese filmmakers, like the master that made ‘Ringu,’ and I would like to take ‘The Wicker Man’ to Japan, except this time he’s a ghost.

Hideo Nakata is the director of whom he speaks, and it took me a couple extra seconds to call his name to memory as my mind was busy exploding. Was Cage serious? Hard to tell of late, given the other films he’s been doing. But I would watch that Ringu Man movie, whatever it turned out to be, without thinking twice.

After the break lurks a variety of news about an incredibly disparate collection of films:  the theoretical follow-up to Before Sunset; Grown Ups 2;  a possible R.I.P.D. sequel, and Riddick. Read More »

On paper, Before Sunset, Richard Linklater‘s 2004 sequel to his delicate 1995 film Before Sunrise, shouldn’t have worked. The ambiguity of Sunrise‘s ending was what left the story, which follows French Celine (Julie Delpy) and American Jesse (Ethan Hawke) as they spend one perfectly romantic evening roaming the streets of Vienna, feeling so bittersweet. To actually answer the question of what had happened to the characters seemed like it would only ruin the mystery.

Instead, Before Sunset proved to be another rich, textured love story every bit the equal of its predecessor, as an older and wiser Celine and Jesse reunited in Paris — with, of course, another deliciously open ending. And now Hawke reveals that he, Delpy, and Linklater may be returning to that well a third time, with another movie revolving around the couple. More details after the jump.
