Briefly: It’s a good week for the much-maligned Kevin Costner action film Waterworld, which was a famous flop when released in 1995. This morning we saw the trailer for The Baytown Outlaws, in which the best line is probably the Waterworld joke. And now, from Forbes, comes the news that Syfy is thinking of making a sequel to the film, either as a standalone TV movie, or even a series.
Why? Because whenever Syfy shows Waterworld, it does really well. So, whether because of genuine appeal or the ironic attention given to a famous dud, the movie has a real fan base, and Syfy wants to exploit it. (Personally, I like the movie. It’s goofy, but fun, and next to The Postman looks like genius.) And, thanks to the deal with Universal that saw the creation of Syfy Films, the company has access to Waterworld and a reason to make a movie. Ironically, Syfy president Dave Howe tells Forbes that his company wants to make modestly-budgeted, story-driven films — not exactly the sort of movie for which Waterworld is a poster child. But if the company can turn the setting and story framework into a good story, more power to them.
