Here’s the first Sin City: A Dame to Kill For trailer, from Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller. Nine years after the release of the first film, the duo has created a sequel that once again splashes Miller’s distinct visual style on the screen. Blending some of Miller’s previously published stories with new material, the film has a giant cast (of course) and appears to be just as grim and relentless as the first.
While the style here is superficially the same as the first film, there’s a more polished digital look here — in my eyes it’s too clean for a grim and gritty city such as this, but your mileage could very well vary.
The existing stories used for the film are “A Dame to Kill For” and “Just Another Saturday Night.” The new material features in two stories, one in which Nancy is on the run from men employed by Senator Roark (Powers Boothe), and then one in which Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the main character. Rodriguez explained last year, “He plays a gambler, a very cocky gambler, who comes in and tries to beat the biggest villain in Sin City at his own game. The story’s called ‘The Long, Bad Night.’ He beats the wrong guy in a game and bad stuff happens to him.”
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For arrives on August 22nd, 2014. It stars Josh Brolin, Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Michael Madsen, Rosario Dawson, Jamie King, Ray Liotta, Christopher Meloni, Jeremy Piven, Dennis Haysbert, Julia Garner, and Juno Temple. Keep an eye on the Robert Rodriguez Twitter account for more material from the film.

In Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Dwight is hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord, and then watches his life go straight to hell. Chronologically, this story takes place prior to “The Big Fat Kill” (featured in the film Frank Miller’s Sin City) and explains how Dwight came to have a dramatically different face.
