As we’ve reported on the quick pre-production and casting of Young Adult, written by Diablo Cody and to be directed by Jason Reitman, there has been no studio involved. But with those two behind the camera and Charlize Theron in as the lead, it didn’t take much to assume that someone would bite quickly. Now Paramount has bought rights to the film.
Deadline says the studio picked up world rights to Young Adult, which has Patrick Wilson as the male lead and Patton Oswalt in a supporting role. The site also reports that Elizabeth Reaser, who plays the matriarch of the Cullen family in the Twilight films, has grabbed a role as the wife of Patrick Wilson’s character.
Diablo Cody has said that Young Adult has humor, but is also…
…pretty serious and fucked up. You don’t get to see women be antiheroes that often, where it’s like somebody like Mickey Rourke, who gets a comeback in ‘The Wrestler.’ It’s rarer that you’ll have a studio say, ‘Let’s have an actress come back and be ugly!’
We’re not talking Monster ‘ugly’ here — it’s ugly in terms of character rather than appearance. And Buddy Slade, the guy Wilson plays, is described as attractive, but a mostly average suburban new dad. He’s a little bit soft, and trying to live a pretty normal life. Looking forward to seeing how he deals with things when Theron’s character decides to conceive of him as some sort of sensual idol.
Young Adult is in pre-production now and should be shooting by November
