Mild 'Maleficent' Trailer Targets A Family Audience

Despite the ABC Family Channel voiceover, the angle used in this "last" trailer for Maleficent is a decent one. It pins the film firmly to the original Sleeping Beauty, and focuses on the "truth" of Maleficent's past as a good fairy who went bad. Sure, there are all those great shots of Angelina Jolie that we've seen so many times in the past few months. But she looks so good as the character that it's difficult to complain about them being repeated. As for the rest of it, well...

Maleficent was directed by former production designer Robert Stromberg (you saw his work as designer in Alice in Wonderland and Avatar) from a script written by Linda Woolverton (The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast). It opens on May 30.

The "Sleeping Beauty" tale is told from the perspective of the villainous Maleficent and looks at the events that hardened her heart and drove her to curse young Princess Aurora.
