Danny Trejo Says Work Begins This Year For 'Machete Kills Again... In Space'

Machete and Machete Kills followed up on the joke trailer Robert Rodriguez created for the Grindhouse double-bill he and Quentin Tarantino put together in 2007. But there have been talks — or jokes, at least — about a third movie.

Rodriguez even opened the second movie with another fake trailer, for Machete Kills Again... In Space. With these films, it's sometimes difficult to gauge what is a real idea and what is a joke, and even what is a joke idea that becomes real. But star Danny Trejo says that work on Machete 3, er, Machete Kills Again ...In Space, will begin this year.

Trejo said this to Halloween Daily News:

Robert and I are going to start to do MACHETE KILLS IN SPACE, so that's going to be awesome. Absolutely. We're going to be working on it this year.

Now, we know that Rodriguez has a couple of primary projects at this point: the From Dusk Till Dawn series on the El Rey Network, and his new version of the Frank Frazetta movie Fire and Ice. (There's even a bunch of Fire and Ice concept art hanging in Rodriguez's Frank Frazetta gallery in Austin — or there was during SXSW, at least.)

It seems like Fire and Ice will be the director's next major effort, but he also shoots movies fairly quickly. Perhaps there is some chance that Machete 3 could shoot next year, so long as financing comes together. The second film did not do very well at the box office, so we don't know what the state of financing for a third looks like right now.

Here's the fake trailer for the film, which ran in front of Machete Kills in 2013.
