Back in Time trailer

Doc Brown doesn’t drive a f*cking Mustang.” That’s just one of the great tidbits that comes to light in Back in Time, a new documentary that takes a nostalgic look at the classic time travel adventure Back to the Future.

With almost all the talking heads you could ever want, this documentary chronicles the inception of Back to the Future, from writer Bob Gale‘s thoughts of what it would be like if he went to high school with his father, talks about how the iconic DeLorean time machine came to be (and was almost a refrigerator or a Ford Mustang), and looks at the enduring legacy of the film franchise.

Here’s the trailer for Back in Time, originally from Apple:

Featuring interviews with director Robert Zemeckis, writer Bob Gale, executive producer Steven Spielberg, and stars Michael F. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson, this seems to be the definitive Back to the Future documentary. Sadly, it doesn’t look like Thomas F. Wilson (Biff Tannen) or Crispin Glover (George McFly) wanted to be part of this documentary.

But beyond the making of the movie, this documentary also shines a light on the awesome Secret Cinema event that paid tribute to Back to the Future, not to mentions peaking with fans who have been inspired and even had their life changed by the film. Clearly the impact that Back to the Future had on our culture is huge, maybe even bigger than some think.

And the good news is that Back in Time arrives on a very special day for Back to the Future fans this year. The documentary debuts on October 21st, 2015. This year that day has been declared Back to the Future Day because it marks the day that Marty McFly and Doc Brown traveled to in the future in Back to the Future Part II. And that day is also when the huge Los Angeles celebration of the film will begin.

The documentary film Back in Time is, at its heart, a look at the very real impact the Back to the Future movies have had on our culture. What was once a little idea that spawned a tightly-focused documentary has grown into something truly amazing over two years of filming. Back in Time is a cinematic monument to the vastness of the trilogy’s fandom. In addition to the footage and interviews revolving around the time machine itself, the crew found that simply by delving into the impact of the trilogy an epic journey began to unfold before them. The crew captured countless hours of footage during filming. From Steven Spielberg to Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale, to the Sheas and Hollers, and from James Tolkan and Lea Thompson to Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox, Back in Time features interview after interview that simply must be seen.
