I’m not sure what it is about X-Men and movie posters, but apparently it’s really hard to make a good one. Remember these teaser posters for X-Men: First Class? They were terrible. And while the first posters for X-Men: Days of Future Past were actually pretty inspired, two new character posters featuring Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen, Jennifer Lawrence and Hugh Jackman definitely take a step back. Check out the new X-Men Days of Future Past posters out below.
Thanks to Empire for these posters.
First, I love that Hugh Jackman’s name is not only on the Wolverine poster, but also the Magneto poster. Kind of confusing. Plus, while he and Mystique certainly have a history, pairing them on the poster doesn’t exactly make a ton of sense. The best reason is they are both in the same pose on the theatrical one sheet. Then again, they’re arguably the two biggest stars in the movie. Not having seen the film, maybe their story lines are more connected than ever this time around.
Honestly, these posters aren’t “terrible.” They’re simply uninspired. The thinking is likely that when you have a cast like this film does, it’s probably best to just showcase them as simply as possible. These do that and a bad poster is not going to hurt the bottom line. (Also of note, making a good X-Men poster isn’t impossible).
X-Men: Days of Future Past, directed by Bryan Singer, opens May 23. It stars Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Halle Berry, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Nicholas Hoult, Peter Dinklage, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart.
