Will Ben Kingsley‘s dynamic performance as The Mandarin come back in future Marvel movies? It seems unlikely. But one of the original ideas for the climactic scene in Iron Man 3 would answer that question with a definitive “No.”
Several animatics by storyboard artist Federico D’Alessandro have come online, and they show the original vision for the film’s finale at the docks. Most of it is almost exactly how director Shane Black rendered it on screen. But there’s more for Rhodey to do, a few more obstacles between Tony and his suits as well as a more permanent ending to the Mandarin’s story. Check them out below.
Here’s the fate of The Mandarin:

Tony fighting Killian:
Each video is slightly different from what we see in the film. Mainly it’s minor action beats that could have been too expensive, or cut for pacing issues. That Mandarin death is really worth discussing, though. Based on this, it seems Trevor was going to inject himself with Extremis and explode from doing it incorrectly. In keeping with the character, I think that might have been a really funny twist, but by not doing it Marvel kept the option of bringing him back open. (In the film, we last see Trevor being taken into custody.)
Though I know Killian was the brains behind the Mandarin’s plot in Iron Man 3, I keep hoping for a double twist where Trevor is the persona, the Mandarin is who you think he is and it was he who was playing Killian all along. There’s no evidence to support that, it’s just something I’m holding out hope for. And the specific decision to NOT kill him definitely leaves the door open.
What are your thoughts on these alternate ending storyboards?
