While many cinephiles are lamenting the fact that Quentin Tarantino has said that he will retire from filmmaking after he makes his 10th film, most will probably celebrate when they hear that Uwe Boll has decided to call it quits too.
The filmmaker behind Alone in the Dark, BloodRayne, Far Cry, Rampage, Postal, Blubberella and Assault on Wall Street is finally putting an end to his reign of terror in cinema, and it’s just a shame it didn’t come sooner. But why is Uwe Boll retiring now? Find out after the jump.
“The market is dead, you don’t make any money anymore on movies because the DVD and Blu-ray market worldwide has dropped 80 per cent in the last three years. That is the real reason; I just cannot afford to make movies.
I never had people giving me money. I’ve been using my money since 2005 and if I hadn’t made the stupid video game based movies I would never have amalgamated the capital so I could say, ‘Let’s make the Darfur movie.’ I don’t need a Ferrari, I don’t need a yacht. I invested in my own movies and I lost money.”
No matter how much we may dislike the movies of Uwe Boll, you have to give the guy credit for being so passionate about filmmaking for so long despite the fact that his movies are belittled at every turn, and the audience for them is minuscule. Putting his own money into these movies maybe wasn’t the best thing he could have done with that money, but you have to respect him for loving filmmaking enough to do that, even with an obvious lack of success.
“It’s way better than Wall Street 2 by Oliver Stone. It’s better researched, it’s better written, it’s better, but it doesn’t have Michael Douglas. It’s not Jason Bourne or any bulls— movie where they make stuff up. My movies are real.”
There are plenty of words we could use to describe Uwe Boll’s movies, but “real” is not one that comes to mind. At least this announcement of retirement isn’t as insane as the video rants he posted last summer, one of which also included the director saying he was done with filmmaking. So it appears to be official now.
Uwe Boll’s final movie will be Rampage: President Down, the final installment in the Rampage series. The film follows the madman Bill Williamson as he assassinates the President of the United States, sparking a manhunt to take him down once and for all. But of course, Bill Williamson doesn’t go down without a fight. Here’s the most recent trailer:
I can’t speak for everyone, but I’m pretty damn happy that this will be Uwe Boll’s last movie. How about you?Cool Posts From Around the Web:
