Transformers The Last Knight TV Spot

Hot on the heels of a new Transformers: The Last Knight clip that debuted over the weekend, a new TV spot for the sequel has arrived that gives us a clue to how this sequel will expand the mythology of the Transformers. The previous sequel, Age of Extinction, already fit Dinobots into preshistoric times, and now The Last Knight will show us how Transformers fit into human history, from medieval Europe to feudal Japan.

A new Transformers The Last Knight TV spot introduces us to the “secret history” of Transformers by showing us a bunch of vintage photos and relics from the past revealing that their relationship with humans spans centuries. Watch it below.

Following this sequel, we know that there are plenty of other Transformers movies in development. There might be as many as 14 movies in the works according to Michael Bay, and this expansion of their mythology throughout human history opens the floodgates for Transformers movies that could be set in pretty much any era.

Honestly, knowing that Transformers have been part of history more than we previously thought makes me much more interested in where the Transformers franchise could go. How cool would it be to see a Transformers samurai movie? There could even be a World War II movie involving Transformers, something that we’ll see played out in some kind of flashback scene involving the Nazis and Winston Churchill in The Last Knight, as teased in quick shots from this TV spot and previous trailers.

But one of the more interesting pieces of Transformers history is how much more the Witwicky family seems to be involved with the Cybertron natives than even the first movie indicated. In the TV spot above, you’ll find this image:

The bottom of the frame says “Order of the Witwiccans, 1901”, which implies that more than just Sam Witwicky’s great-great-grandfather had a connection to the Transformers. There could be even more stories to tell involving the Witwicky family, even if Shia LaBeouf isn’t involved in the series anymore.

If you want to see more from The Last Knight, watch the recent trailer. In the meantime, here’s a new poster:

When all seems lost, a few brave souls can save everything we’ve ever known. The Last Knight shatters the core myths of the Transformers franchise, and redefines what it means to be a hero. Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Saving our world falls upon the shoulders of an unlikely alliance: Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg); Bumblebee; an English Lord (Sir Anthony Hopkins); and an Oxford Professor (Laura Haddock). There comes a moment in everyone’s life when we are called upon to make a difference. In Transformers: The Last Knight, the hunted will become heroes. Heroes will become villains. Only one world will survive: theirs, or ours.

Transformers: The Last Knight opens on June 23, 2017.
