Elisabeth Moss Returning For 'Top Of The Lake' Season 2

Jane Campion and Gerard Lee have taken time getting the pieces together for Top of the Lake Season 2, but at long last some exciting new details have emerged. A new report indicates Elisabeth Moss is set to return as detective Robin Griffin, whose latest case unfolds in Sydney, Australia. More details on Top of the Lake Season 2 after the jump. IF.com.au reported the news. Series creators Campion and Lee, who scripted the entire first season, will do the same for Top of the Lake Season 2. Campion additionally plans to co-direct, as she did in Season 1. Garth Davis helmed Season 1 with Campion, but her co-director for Season 2 has yet to be named.

Season 2 will be set and shot in Sydney, but plot details are otherwise sparse. Season 1 took Robin to her remote New Zealand hometown to investigate the disappearance of a pregnant 12-year-old girl. David Wenham, Peter Mullan, Thomas M. Wright, and Holly Hunter starred alongside Moss but it's unclear if any of them will return for Season 2.

Emile Sherman, of producer See-Saw Films, told IF, "We are thrilled to be working with Jane again. She is at the top of her game. She and Gerard have created this world from the ground up." Pre-production gets underway in December, meaning we'll likely see the finished product in late 2016 or early 2017.

The first season of Top of the Lake debuted at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival to widespread acclaim, and debuted on the Sundance Channel in the U.S. that spring. (It played on BBC UKTV in Australia and New Zealand.) It was nominated for eight Emmys, although it sadly only won one, for cinematography.

Moss is coming off of the final season of Mad Men, and seems to have had no trouble transitioning into the next phase of her career. Top of the Lake definitively proved she was more than just Peggy Olson, and she was even courted for the similarly gritty True Detective at one point. Outside of TV, she's earned high praise for her performances in Listen Up PhilipThe One I Love, and Queen of Earth.
