Tomb Raider trailer

The hit video game series Tomb Raider comes to the big screen, again, with a brand new Tomb Raider trailer. Academy Award Winner Alicia Vikander is Lara Croft, tank-top enthusiast and raider of dangerous tombs. The new Tomb Raider trailer pits Vikander’s Croft against the elements, like raging rivers, roaring fires, and a bearded Walton Goggins.

The new Tomb Raider trailer is here, and it looks…okay? A Tomb Raider movie clearly isn’t going to be going for high art, and for the most part, this new Tomb Raider trailer delivers on lots of action and lots of shots of star Alicia Vikander running around. Check it out.

Once you get beyond the fact that this is yet another trailer using a slowed-down pop song (in this case, Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor”!), you get pretty much what you’d expect: Lara Croft kicking ass and taking names. Best of all, you get a lot of shots of Walton Goggins playing the bearded bad guy. I can dig it. Here’s the extremely wordy Tomb Raider synopsis.

Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.

Leaving everything she knows behind, Lara goes in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous. Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown. If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.

Tomb Raider began as an action-adventure video game in 1996, going on to span multiple sequels. In 2013, the video game was rebooted with Tomb Raider and 2015 sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider. The series had previously been adapted into two films: 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003’s Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, both starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft.

This new Tomb Raider comes from director Roar Uthaug, and also stars Dominic West, Daniel Wu, and Kristin Scott Thomas.

Tomb Raider opens March 16, 2018.
