Thor's Roommate Darryl in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

One of the highlights of the Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con this past summer was a special mockumentary from Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi that revealed what the God of Thunder was up to during the events of Captain America: Civil War, which included living with some dude named Daryl in a small apartment in Australia. The comedic short film was released online recently, and you’ll also find it among the special features of the home video release of Civil War as well.

Now it seems there’s a chance we might see Thor’s roommate Darryl (played by Daley Pearson) appear again in the Marvel cinematic universe, and Taika Waititi teases that the short may be hinting at something bigger on the horizon. Find out what he had to say below.

Even though Taika Waititi has been busy shooting Thor: Ragnarok down in Australia, he had time to speak with IGN while promoting the upcoming October home video release of Hunt for the Wilderpeople (a fantastic indie comedy that you must see). Conversation turned to the hilarious Thor mockumentary, and when asked whether or not we’ll see Thor’s roommate Darryl in the Marvel cinematic universe again, this is what he had to say:

“I think you probably could see him again. There may be other little pieces of that thing that everyone saw that may just be a small part of a bigger thing.”

Does that mean we’ll see Daryl pop up in Thor: Ragnarok? At the very least, a cameo from Darryl would be possible, but would such a cameo hint at the fact that he lived with Thor for a short period of time or would it just be a funny easter egg? That actually begs a bigger question about Darryl’s place in the Marvel cinematic universe.

Is this mockumentary short considered canon in the Marvel cinematic universe? While Thor living with a random human in Australia makes for a funny short film, can fans assume that it’s actually part of the larger Marvel timeline? That sounds like it could be difficult to make canon since the short features Thor hanging out with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) in Australia.

At the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Hulk was seen flying off into the distance in a Quinjet. Early rumors pegged the character as going to space to lead to a Planet Hulk movie, and while we know that’s not the case anymore, hints from the Comic-Con panel indicate that we’re getting a form of that story in Thor: Ragnarok with concept art of the God of Thunder fighting the big guy in some kind of gladiator match. Is there a chance Banner also took some downtime in Australia before heading to space? Are we getting too nerdy when it comes to asking questions about the Thor mockumentary?

We’ll likely have to wait until next fall to find out what role Daryl plays in the future of the Marvel cinematic universe. Maybe Waititi’s comment about seeing smaller parts of something bigger is with regards to Thor trying to learn as much as he can about Thanos. Thor could easily be spending time away from Earth figuring out where the other Infinity Stones are or just trying to learn more about the Mad Titan himself. Or perhaps Marvel will listen to fans’ demand to make a Netflix series following Thor and Darryl. Stay tuned.
