The second season of The Walking Dead is only two episodes old, and the characters have yet to desert the primary location of those episodes, but AMC has already seen enough. The cable station just renewed the zombie smash hit for a third season. The full details are after the jump.
The season two premiere of The Walking Dead had more adult viewers ages 18-49 than any show in cable history and even though this past Sunday’s second episode had a 20% drop off, the show’s viewership is incredibly massive. Like a zombie, renewal is a total no-brainer.
Fans will now have a chance to see the story through to at least third season, which is exciting for several reasons. Obviously, the biggest one is we’ll get to see the live action interpretation of more of Robert Kirkman‘s comic book story. The other reason is the current pace of the series is incredibly slow. For a full season and two episodes now, very little time has passed. This season alone, as stated above, certain characters have yet to move away from the central location of a traffic jam and it’s possible, albeit it unlikely, the entire season could rotate around one location. This story obviously needs multiple seasons to reach its conclusion, whatever Kirkman and fellow producers decide that is, and now they have another.

AMC announced today the renewal of “The Walking Dead” for a third season. Season two continues to deliver the strongest telecasts for any drama in basic cable history against Adults 18-49 shattering a basic cable record set nearly 10 years ago for a single drama telecast (“The Dead Zone”). “The Walking Dead” is based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman and published by Image Comics. Glen Mazzara serves as series’ showrunner. Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert and Frank Darabont are executive producers. Greg Nicotero is a co-executive producer.

The series’ international premieres delivered equally impressive results in all major international TV markets, and broke pay-TV ratings’ records across the world. Over 10 million viewers in 122 countries tuned in live to watch the second season premiere of this highly anticipated returning drama. And, FIC will once again be the international broadcasting partner for the series with Entertainment One continuing to distribute in non-FIC markets.
