Netflix recently announced they plan on releasing a whopping total of 700 original movies and TV shows this year alone. That may seem like an almost impossible number, but every other day now, a new Netflix original trailer will appear. Here’s the latest: The Mechanism, a new series from José Padilha (Narcos, Elite Squad 1 & 2, the RoboCop remake) and screenwriter Elena Soarez (Filhos do Carnaval, Eu tu Eles, Casa de Areia). The series is based on a shocking true story, and the Mechanism trailer looks intense. Check it out.

Per Netflix’s press site, “The series stars Selton Mello (Ligações Perigosas, Meu Nome Não é Johnny, O Palhaço) as Marco Ruffo, a retired federal police deputy obsessed with the case at hand; Caroline Abras (Avenida Brasil, Se nada mais der certo, Perto de qualquer lugar) as Verena Cardoni, Ruffo’s gutsy mentee; and Enrique Diaz (Justiça, Felizes para Sempre?) as Roberto Ibrahim, an outlaw who lies at the heart of Ruffo’s obsession.”

Other cast members include Lee Taylor (A pedra do reino; Velho chico, Riocorrente), Antonio Saboia (A wolf at the door; Fora da lei)Jonathan Haagensen (City of God, Noel, poeta da vila), Alessandra Colasanti (A verdadeira história da bailarina de vermelho), Leonardo Medeiros (Cabra-cega, Onde quer que você esteja), Otto Jr. (Malhação, The Silver Cliff), Susana Ribeiro (O Dono do MundoMeu Bem Querer) and Osvaldo Mil (A Máquina, Preamar).

The case that inspired the show started off as a simple money laundering investigation, and then ballooned into something much, much larger, blowing the lid off of massive corruption at a state-controlled oil company. Per The Inverse, the real-life scandal that inspired the show involved a money laundering operation that ran “something to the tune of $9.5 billion USD to date amongst the many operations. The network for doing so was damn near impenetrable, especially considering it involved an intricate network of high-profile politicians and corporate businessmen.”

The Mechanism hits Netflix on March 23, 2018.

From acclaimed director José Padilha (Narcos, Elite Squad 1 & 2, RoboCop) and prolific screenwriter Elena Soarez (Filhos do Carnaval, Eu tu Eles, Casa de Areia) comes THE MECHANISM, a fictionalized crime drama inspired by real events in Brazil that propelled the biggest corruption scandal of all time.

A thrilling, character-driven original series, THE MECHANISM explores how a small group of dogged investigators comes to discover the inner workings of a monstrous corruption scheme and the impact their pursuit has on everyone involved – including themselves.
