The Martian viral teaser

Hot on the heels of some new images from Ridley Scott‘s sci-fi adaptation The Martian, a viral video has surfaced online in the form of a video diary from astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) on the Hermes. The ship is in the process of heading to Mars, and all the astronauts are preparing for the mission ahead. It’s a pretty cool way to introduce the characters.

Watch The Martian viral teaser after the jump!

As you can see, we meet Jessica Chastain, Michael Pena, Sebastian Stan and Aksel Hennie on board the ship. But beyond meeting the characters, there’s also some other cool information to absorb. If you pay attention to all of the pop-up graphics throughout the video, you’ll learn little fun facts about each of the crew members. Again, it’s a great way to meet the characters we’ll see on the big screen this fall.

Another nice touch is the use of updates from Twitter following this live broadcast from the Hermes, which would undoubtedly be a very cool program to follow live online. And for sports fans, there’s a a nice dig at the Chicago Cubs, who still haven’t won the World Series. In fact, it seems like Damon’s character is straight from Chicago since he talks about going to Gino’s for some deep dish pizza.

Most of it is all just a charming introduction to the characters, but I’m wondering what that little bit is in the beginning with Damon being confused by a document that’s in Armenian. Is there a chance that will be something important later in the story? People who have read the book will probably know, but the rest of us will have to wait to find out.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

The Martian hits theaters on November 25th this fall.
