Director Steven Soderbergh once shook things up in the film world by working with adult film star Sasha Grey for his experimental drama The Girlfriend Experience. The film followed the life of a call girl moving from client to client in New York City during the days leading up the 2008 presidential election. Now Soderbergh is taking the story of a high end sex worker to Starz with the new limited series going by the same title.
Riley Keough stars in the show as Christine Reade, a second year student at Chicago-Burnham Law School and a new intern at the prestigious firm of Kirkland & Allen. Her future is promising in her field, but then she takes interest in getting paid for sexual relationships for a very high price. And as the trailer illustrates, it might even prove to be more lucrative and rewarding than her work in the law.

This looks like quite the saucy show, but that’s not surprising considering the subject matter. Riley Keough is no stranger to getting sexy on screen following a turn in Magic Mike as well as Mad Max: Fury Road, and since this is a Starz series, there’s no limit on sexual content and nudity.
The Girlfriend Experience is also taking a new release approach for a cable series. First of all, each episode is only 30 minutes, which is almost unheard of for a drama series. And all 13 episodes will be available on Starz Play and Starz On Demand starting on the same day that the series will begin airing a new episode each Sunday at 8pm Eastern/Pacific Time. This could be the new model for networks trying to battle the binge appeal of shows on Netflix.
Mary Lynn Rajskub, Paul Sparks, and Kate Lyn Sheil also star in the series produced by Steven Soderbergh.
The Girlfriend Experience follows Christine Reade, a second year student at Chicago-Burnham Law School and a new intern at the prestigious firm of Kirkland & Allen. Working hard to establish herself at the firm, her focus quickly shifts when a classmate introduces her to the world of transactional relationships. Known as GFEs, they are women who provide “The Girlfriend Experience”—emotional and sexual relationships at a very high price. Juggling two very different lives, Christine quickly finds herself drawn into the GFE world, attracted to the rush of control and intimacy.
The Girlfriend Experience premieres on cable and online on April 10th.
