'The Girl In The Spider's Web' Trailer: Meet The New Lisbeth Salander [Updated]

Update: A second (and completely different) trailer has arrived online.

Lisbeth Salander, aka The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, is back, and she's got a whole new look. The Crown actress Claire Foy steps into the role for the new film The Girl In The Spider's Web, which draws inspiration from Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy. Watch the Girl In The Spider's Web trailer below.

There's also an international trailer, which is completely different than the one above, and – in my humble opinion – better.

The Girl In The Spider's Web International Trailer

Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy has served as the inspiration for a slew of films. First, there were the Swedish-language adaptations of Larson's three books – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) The Girl Who Played with Fire (2009) and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest (2009). Then in 2011, the American remake of Dragon Tattoo arrived, directed by David Fincher and starring Rooney Mara as hacker Lisbeth Salander, and Daniel Craig as journalist  Mikael Blomkvist.

Fincher's film was a hit despite it's disturbing subject matter, and the director expressed interest in filming the two sequels – Played with Fire and Kicked the Hornets' Nest – back to back. Yet the sequels never materialized. Both Fincher and Mara continued to express interest in making the movies, but Sony never got the films off the ground. In 2015, Sony decided to reboot the franchise entirely and adapt The Girl In The Spider's Web. While set in the same universe as the original Millennium trilogy, Spider's Web was authored by David Lagercrantz, as original author Stieg Larsson died of a heart attack in 2004.

And now here we are! With the brand new take on the material, featuring Claire Foy taking over for Rooney Mara as Lisbeth and Sverrir Gudnason stepping in for Daniel Craig as Blomkvist. Don't Breathe filmmaker Fede Álvarez helms the movie, which finds Lisbeth and Blomkvist "caught in a web of spies, cyber criminals and corrupt government officials."

I'm torn on this whole endeavor. I loved Fincher's Dragon Tattoo, and would've really liked to have him return with Mara and Craig again. At the same time, Álvarez is an accomplished filmmaker, and I'm curious to see Foy step into a much darker role.  The rest of the cast is pretty impressive too: Sylvia Hoeks, Claes Bang, LaKeith Stanfield, Cameron Britton and Stephen Merchant all co-star.

The Girl In The Spider's Web opens November 9, 2018.

Lisbeth Salander, the cult figure and title character of the acclaimed Millennium book series created by Stieg Larsson, will return to the screen in The Girl in the Spider's Web, a first-time adaptation of the recent global bestseller. Golden Globe winner Claire Foy, the star of "The Crown," will play the outcast vigilante defender under the direction of Fede Alvarez, the director of 2016's breakout thriller Don't Breathe; the screenplay adaptation is by Steven Knight and Fede Alvarez & Jay Basu.
