the cured trailer

What would happen if, following a zombie outbreak, someone found a cure for zombieism? How would the former zombies adjust to being reintroduced into society – and would society even want them back? That’s the intriguing premise behind The Cured, a new horror-drama starring Ellen Page. Watch The Cured trailer below.

I’m sure people will disagree with this assessment, but I’m pretty sure the zombie genre is played-out. There was a time when zombie movies seemed fresh and exciting, but now, thanks to countless movies and approximately 500 seasons of The Walking Dead, zombie stories seemed to have run dry. With that in mind, I have to admit: the concept of the new film The Cured is one of the most inventive approaches to a zombie film in a long time. In the film, a cure is developed following a zombie-like outbreak that enables former zombies to return to normal, human life. Of course, they now bring with them the baggage of having been blood-thirsty ghouls, which, needless to say, doesn’t go over so well. Watch the trailer and see for yourself.

The Cured trailer

The Cured stars Ellen Page, Sam Keeley, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, and Paula Malcomson and marks the feature directorial debut of David Freyne. Again, I’m very burned-out on zombie movies, but the concept of this movie is different enough to possibly raise the zombie genre from the dead. Or you could just keep watching The Walking Dead for the rest of your life. Here’s the official The Cured synopsis.

What happens when the undead return to life? In a world ravaged for years by a virus that turns the infected into zombie-like cannibals, a cure is at last found and the wrenching process of reintegrating the survivors back into society begins. Among the formerly afflicted is Senan (Sam Keeley), a young man haunted by the horrific acts he committed while infected. Welcomed back into the family of his widowed sister-in-law (Ellen Page), Senan attempts to restart his life—but is society ready to forgive him and those like him? Or will fear and prejudice once again tear the world apart? Pulsing with provocative parallels to our troubled times, The Cured is a smart, scary, and hauntingly human tale of guilt and redemption.

The Cured played at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, and even though I was there at the festival, I heard absolutely zero buzz about this movie. That’s not a very good sign, but perhaps it just slipped through the cracks. Decide for yourself when The Cured opens in theaters and on demand February 23, 2018.
