'The Avengers' Shot Partially On An iPhone

If you're a regular reader of Superhero Bits, you already knew this and if you aren't, what the heck are you thinking? Yesterday we ran a bit that has since gone viral so we figured we'd pull it out for all to see. It turns out Seamus McGarvey, Joss Whedon's director of photography on The Avengers, revealed in a recent interview that some of Marvel's epic superhero team-up was shot on an iPhone. The shots not only ended up in the movie; they've already been used in the trailer. Read his exact words and analyze the trailer below.

Thanks to The Irish Film & Television Network (via Comic Book Movie) for this revelation. Here's the quote:

The beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand. On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer! I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film.

One would think shooting a two hundred million dollar movie on a iPhone would certainly "affect the look of the film" but I dare you to pick out the shots in question in this trailer. They all look great.

But, of course, this is not a new thing. Awesome filmmaker Park Chan-wook shot his whole film Paranmanjang on an iPhone. If he didn't tell you that, you couldn't tell.

Which shots do you think McGarvey was referring to? Do you think, in retrospect, he wishes he had the new iPhone 4S camera? Does this end the Mac vs. PC or iPhone vs. Android debate?
