'Terminator: Genisys' Trailer Highlights An Unconventional Family Feud

Everyone's favorite time-hopping robots and resistance fighters are back in the latest Terminator Genisys trailer. Emilia Clarke plays Sarah Connor, Jason Clarke is her son John Connor, and Jai Courtney is his dad Kyle Reese. Which I guess makes the T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) John's adopted grandfather, sort of, since he's Sarah's guardian.

It all adds up to a pretty unconventional family, but a family all the same. And like all families, they tend to bicker when they get together. It's just that their infighting has vast repercussions for the decades-long battle against sentient killer machines. Watch the Terminator Genisys trailer after the jump.

Also, what the hell does it do to continuity when a woman and her time-traveling son battle each other? On second thought, don't answer that. I am not going to give myself that headache until I absolutely need to.

More straightforward is this TV spot, which helpfully reminds you that Emilia Clarke isn't just the mother of dragons. She's also the mother of the resistance.

While the video above doesn't point this out, Clarke isn't the only Game of Thrones connection here. Terminator: Genisys is also directed by Alan Taylor, who's helmed several episodes of the HBO series.

Terminator: Genisys opens July 1.

When John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of the human resistance, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline. Now, Sgt. Reese finds himself in a new and unfamiliar version of the past, where he is faced with unlikely allies, including the Guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger), dangerous new enemies, and an unexpected new mission: To reset the future...
