This is shaping up to be a good summer for Ellen Page, or at least for fans of Ellen Page. Next month, the actress stars in two movies: Tallulah and Into the Forest. The trailer for the latter — a somber apocalyptic drama co-starring Evan Rachel Wood — was released last month. Today, we have our first real look at Tallulah, Sian Heder‘s feature directorial debut which also features Allison Janney, Zachary Quinto, and David Zayas.
Below, watch the Tallulah trailer.
Heder is probably best known for Orange Is the New Black. She’s worked as a story editor and screenwriter on the Netflix series; she wrote two particularly good episodes, “Lesbian Request Denied” and “Fucksgiving.” Heder has directed some short films over the years and has acted in a variety of projects, but Tallulah is her first feature film. Nobody from the site had the chance to see it at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it was reviewed positively and acquired by Netflix.
Here’s the Tallulah trailer:
This drama looks a lot different than Heder’s last short film, Dog Eat Dog, which also starred Zachary Quinto playing a man that becomes too attached to a dog he wants to save. It’s a funny short with a satisfying payoff. Tonally, it’s quite broad, which is the opposite of this trailer — although it is hard to get a handle on the exact tone of Tallulah based on this footage. There’s a bleakness to the story that doesn’t seem entirely to gel with the inspirational feel-good moments in this trailer, but perhaps it’s only a tonal issue with the trailer, not the movie itself, and maybe Heder earns those more inspiring moments in the actual film.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Tallulah, the Netflix original film, was written and directed by Sian Heder (Orange is the New Black), and tells the story of young vagabond, Lu (Ellen Page – Whip It, Inception), who lives in a van and is fiercely independent in her hand-to-mouth existence. When a chance encounter incites her to impulsively “”rescue”” a baby from a negligent mother, Lu, at a loss for what to do, turns to the only responsible adult she knows: Margo (Allison Janney – Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, The Way, Way Back), who mistakenly believes she’s the child’s grandmother. Tammy Blanchard (Into the Woods, Moneyball), Zachary Quinto (Star Trek, Girls), John Benjamin Hickey (The Good Wife, Manhattan) and Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black, The Wiz Live!), also round out the cast.
Tallulah is available on Netflix starting July 29th.Cool Posts From Around the Web:
