New Blu-ray releases

(Welcome to Not Dead Yet, a feature dedicated to what’s new on Blu-ray and what special features you should be excited about. Because yes, some of us still like to own physical copies of our movies.)

Happy Halloween! Open your goodie bags and/or plastic pumpkin buckets and I’ll drop some fine physical media in there. In this latest Blu-ray round-up, I’ve got a group of films that are actually perfect for Halloween. They’re also perfect for any day besides Halloween, too. You don’t need Halloween as an excuse to watch creepy movies, folks. They’re good all year round.

Below you’ll find a George Romero later-day zombie film, a remake of a Romero classic, a spooky post-modern ghost story starring Kristen Stewart, and a polarizing trip to Twin Peaks. Here are the new Blu-ray releases you should check out this week.

zack snyder short film snow steam iron

Zack Snyder’s short film Snow Steam Iron is now available to stream on the social network Vero. The arrival of the short comes at dark moment in the filmmaker’s career and this could provide some interesting insight into what the director of Batman v Superman, Watchmen, and 300 is doing now that he’s stepped away from superhero movies for the time being. After all, sometimes an artist needs to get back to the basics and clear his head.

Of course, you have to download an app to watch it, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

Superman new costume

Over a year ago, actor Henry Cavill teased Superman was changing up his style for Justice League. All directions seem to point to he’s coming back from the dead with a new look: the famous black suit. The next time we see Superman, he may resemble the fallen hero from “The Death of Superman.” Now, a toy for Justice League shows the character sporting the black suit.

Below, check out the Superman black suit action figure.

Cool Posts From Around the Web:

Steppenwolf mask

We haven’t seen much of Steppenwolf’s not-so-pretty mug from the Justice League marketing. The big bad of the film is played via motion-capture by Ciarán Hinds, so the little we’ve seen of villain’s face has been blurry, probably unfinished visual effects.

And because toys and other merch always seem to outpace their own movies, a new mask gives a slightly better idea of Steppenwolf’s grizzled face looks like.

Justice League Batman

Ben Affleck‘s future as Batman appears uncertain with the rumor mill suggesting he wants out. Just yesterday his own brother said he doesn’t think he’ll star in The Batman. Affleck, however, recently dismissed these rumors at Comic-Con. The Argo director is still Batman until he (or Warner Bros.) says otherwise. This Fall, he’ll be back as the character in Justice League, which he says features a less vengeful and more heroic Batman.

Below, Ben Affleck talks about the differences between the character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

Justice League Reshoots

Frenzied reports of the goings-on of the Justice League reshoots have DC Extended Universe fans concerned that this spells Doomsday for massive superhero team-up movie. But Justice League star and Caped Crusader himself, Ben Affleck, is swooping in to save the day and say, don’t worry. Um…we think?

Affleck commented on the upcoming Justice League movie, which was directed by Zack Snyder before he left due to family tragedy. Former Marvel Studios favorite Joss Whedon, who had recently jumped across the aisle to direct Batgirl, stepped in to handle reshoots. The two-director situation is unusual, but shouldn’t have fans too worried, Affleck said, diplomatically calling Justice League “an interesting product of two directors.” Interesting.

Zack Snyder DC Films

While Christopher Nolan kept DC Comics movies in the public eye with his Dark Knight trilogy starting in the mid-2000s, Nolan’s insistence that his movies exist in their own cinematic realm resulted in the higher-ups at Warner Bros. and DC looking for a new creative partner who could kickstart a cinematic universe to rival what was happening at Marvel Studios. They chose Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen), who directed Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and (most of) Justice League, but a new report claims that Snyder’s influence over the DCEU will be significantly smaller moving forward. And if that weren’t enough, Suicide Squad director David Ayer might be leaving the DCEU entirely.

Joss Whedon Justice League directing credit

When director Zack Snyder stepped away from Warner Bros.’ and DC Films’ mega-anticipated superhero team-up film Justice League in the wake of a family tragedy, the man who directed The Avengers stepped in to take his place. But will Joss Whedon receive directing credit for his work on the movie? A new report claims he won’t, and also sheds some light on the film’s extensive (and expensive) reshoots.
