Just because J.J. Abrams and the crew of the Enterprise are currently hard at work filming the still-untitled sequel to 2009′s Star Trek, doesn’t mean there isn’t anything new to report. Several of the film’s cast and crew have been out and about giving hints about what’s going on behind closed doors. For example, Zoe Saldana was at the Sundance Film Festival promoting The Words (review here) and gave a few of info about the developing relationships between Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto), and Spock and her character Uhura.
Then there’s the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy, who revealed he’ll be visiting the set of the film soon, though everyone has previously said no original cast members will be in the film this time around. Finally, the new Spock, Quinto, turned some heads when he mentioned that the script for the film, written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof was changing on a daily basis. Orci took to the Internet to clear that up and hinted at the time frame of the sequel.

We’re covering a few sequels in very different stages of the development process today — one that’s gearing up to begin shooting soon, another that’s yet to be greenlit, and two more that’ve been in the works for what feels like forever. After the jump:
- Bill Murray literally shreds the latest Ghostbusters 3 script to pieces
- David Fincher wants to shoot the two Dragon Tattoo sequels back-to-back
- Gary Mitchell — or Harry Mudd or Trelane or the Talosians or the Horta — could be the baddie in Star Trek 2
- Kathleen Kennedy says Roger Rabbit 2 is stalled for now

I’m not sure exactly why this is happening, but hey, I’m not about to complain. As part of something called IMAX Big Movie Week, AMC Theatres is bringing back three past blockbusters to IMAX screens for one week starting today: Christopher Nolan‘s Inception, J.J. Abrams‘ Star Trek, and Fast and the Furious five-quel Fast Five. And the best part is, tickets will cost just $7 each. That’s significantly cheaper than regular, non-IMAX tickets cost in many AMC theaters, so it’s a pretty sweet deal. More details after the jump.

This is a serious little casting break that follows either movies with serious intent (there’s one below about ‘unwitting incest,’ which I hope isn’t a comedy) or serious filmmakers like Kelly Reichardt. So, after the break, you’ll find:
- Juliette Lewis stars in the ‘unwitting incest’ movie Blood or Water,
- Ted Levin is in an indie inspired by secret CIA programs,
- and Peter Sarsgaard is going to be in Kelly Reichardt’s new film, Night Moves. Read More »

One of the top 10 screenplays listed on The Black List this year was a script by JC Chandor titled Margin Call.
While I often refer to The Black List as a annual list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, that isn’t actually the case — the list is compiled with a poll of 300 development executives and high-level assistants, and contains a ranking of the hot screenplays making the rounds in Hollywoodland, which were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2010 and will not be released in theaters during this calendar year. Basically, the black list contains the hottest projects in Hollywood that you haven’t heard of yet. Some of the screenplays have been acquired and some are even in production. Margin Call was actually in the can before the list was even released.
“Based on true events,” the film chronicles the final twenty-four hours of Lehman Brothers. Chandor directed the film, which stars Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Zachary Quinto, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci, and Demi Moore. I always love dramatic thrillers set in an isolated amount of time or one location, and this film seems to fit both categories. Although /Film’s own David Chen seemed to hate the movie, calling it “A Movie About The Financial Disaster That’s a Cinematic Disaster” when the movie premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Watch a trailer for Margin Call embedded after the jump.

Like her House Bunny co-star Emma Stone, Anna Faris is one of those actresses who has enough charm and verve to brighten up even the most lackluster material. And it’s mostly for that reason that I’m actually looking forward to What’s Your Number? The upcoming romcom features Faris as a woman who, upon realizing that she has slept with 20 men, revisits her former flames to see if “the one” might’ve been among them. Watch the trailer after the jump.

How does Sebastian Gutierrez keep getting these actors to appear in his films? So far just about all of his work has been laden with impressively star-studded casts, but nothing he’s produced has even come close to finding any sort of success at the box office — or with critics, for that matter. I guess that’s of no consequence for his next effort though, since the film is being released exclusively on the Internet. For free.
That film is Girl Walks Into a Bar, and it brings together an ensemble cast including Carla Gugino, Zachary Quinto, Josh Hartnett, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Robert Forster, Alexis Bledel and many more. That roster of actors is incentive enough to check out the film. That you won’t have to pay to do so is the cherry on top. Learn more about the film and check out the trailer after the break. At the end of this first weekend of the 2011 Sundance Film Festival there have been two major buys. One was made by Paramount for Like Crazy, one of the most-praised films at the fest so far. (Look for our review tomorrow morning.) And on the other side of the spectrum, LionsGate and Roadside Attractions have teamed up to buy J.C. Chandor‘s debut feature Margin Call, which has garnered some of the poorer reviews of the fest. Read More »
