xXx 4

The wait is almost over. In nine days, audiences will see Vin Diesel return to one of his earliest star-making roles, Xander Cage. It’s been over 14 years since Diesel last played the tatted and beefed up super spy in xXx. He’s not the only one returning to this franchise, though.

Below, watch the new xXx: Return of Xander Cage TV spot (Spoilers follow).

xXx: Return of Xander Cage - Vin Diesel - xXx 3 Clip

As we see more footage of Vin Diesel in action from xXx: Return of Xander Cage, it’s clear that we’re getting a movie that is somehow even more ridiculous than anything from the Fast and Furious franchise. Because Diesel’s character is an extreme athlete turned government operative, this affords the movie a suspension of disbelief so wacky that we’re totally cool with dirtbikes turning into jetskis. And now we’re going to have to accept another equally insane stunt.

A new xXx Return of Xander Cage clip has been revealed, and it features Diesel taking quite the leap off a radio tower and into the jungle. But don’t worry, he’s equipped with the best tools for surviving a leap like that: skis. That’s right, Vin Diesel skis through the jungle, tossing some stylish flips in there just for good measure. xXx 3 Trailer - xXx: Return of Xander Cage

Earlier this week, the first trailer for The Fate of the Furious delivered some pretty insane developments for the Fast and the Furious franchise by turning Vin Diesel‘s character Dom against the crew he calls family. However, that’s still not the craziest thing that Vin Diesel will be doing on the big screen next year.

Let’s not forget that xXx: Return of Xander Cage is coming to theaters next month. This is a movie where the first trailer featured Vin Diesel jumping over a speeding car and riding a motorcycle in skis through the ocean. And now a short new trailer features him doing something else ridiculous: breaking a gun over his knee.

xXx 3 trailer

“Kick some ass, get the girl, try to look dope while you’re doing it.” That’s the advice Augustus Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson) gives spy / extreme sports enthusiast (Vin Diesel) in the new trailer for xXx: Return of Xander Cage, and it’s really the appeal of this entire movie in a nutshell. Sometimes, you just want to watch a movie about a guy who kicks some ass, gets the girl, and tries to look dope while he’s doing it. Whether he succeeds at looking dope, of course, is the question, and that’s up for you to judge. Watch the xXx 3 trailer below.

xxx 3 character posters

How long has it been since you’ve watched the original xXx? Released in 2002 near the dawn of Vin Diesel‘s career as one of our strangest (and most strangely lovable) action stars, it was very much a product of its time, combining ’80s action, ’90s style, and two youthful middle fingers to the James Bond franchise. It was terrible. But it remains a fascinating artifact, a film from a time of great transition that will be studied by action movie scholars as a key moment in…something. We’ll figure out that something at a later date.

My point is that the modern action movie has changed a lot in the past decade and what was pretty rad to the cool kids back in the early ’00s doesn’t fly these days. What’s most interesting about this batch of new character posters for xXx: Return of Xander Cage is that they show off a franchise that may very well have grown with the times.

xXx Return of Xander Cage trailer

I’d say “I can’t believe they made another xXx movie,” but in a year where we’ve gotten sequels for everything from Independence Day: Resurgence to Snow White and the Huntsman, of freaking course they made another xXx movie. After all, Vin Diesel is bigger now than he’s ever been, but even he can’t make another Fast and the Furious movie every year. Why not squeeze him into a different action-adventure in the meantime?

Directed by D.J. Caruso, xXx: Return of Xander Cage brings the extreme-sports-enthusiast-turned-spy out of retirement for a dangerous new assignment. Samuel L. Jackson is back as his handler, Augustus Gibbons, and the supporting cast includes Ruby RoseNina DobrevDonnie YenTony Jaa, and Kris Wu.
