Spider-Man Homecoming Blu-ray

(Welcome to Not Dead Yet, a feature dedicated to what’s new on Blu-ray and what special features you should be excited about. Because yes, some of us still like to own physical copies of our movies.)

It’s time for another round-up of the best Blu-ray releases you can find this week. While some of you may have made the full switch to digital, I’ll be riding the Blu-ray train until this baby derails! There’s just something warmer about Blu-ray compared to digital; something more inviting. Or that could all be in my head.

This week’s Blu-ray column includes one of Marvel’s most enjoyable films, a Stanley Kubrick masterpiece, a fantastic film noir, one of the best directed films of 2017, a long-lost horror film, a not-so-classic recent horror film, and a bonafide Frank Capra classic. Here are the new Blu-ray releases you should check out this week.

If you cross Joey King, get ready to pay the consequences. That’s basically the premise of Wish Upon, in which the The ConjuringWhite House Down, and Wish I Was Here star gets seven wishes to do as she pleases, like making a bully rot. A pretty sweet deal for a teenager quickly goes terribly wrong in director John R. Leonetti‘s (Annabelle) summer horror movie.

Wish Upon Trailer

The cautionary advice of “be careful what you wish for” has been the center of endless tales of horror. Every now and then, it gets a rather literal depiction, which is exactly what Wish Upon looks to be bringing to the table this summer.

Joey King stars in the horror thriller about a bullied teenage girl named Clare who is given an ornate music box that somehow grants her seven wishes. A new trailer shows us what happens when she wishes that the girl responsible for making her life a living hell in high school would “just go rot,” but we already saw that in the original trailer. What’s new is a bit of background on the box which shows that it has quite the history of ruining the lives of those who had it in their possession.

WISH UPON trailer

Actress Joey King gives an excellent performance in The Conjuring. The sense of fear and terror she expresses is unsettling, especially during the “there’s someone behind the door” sequence. Not all actors are believable acting scared, but she can pull it off. Now she’s back in the horror genre with Wish Upon, which reunites her with The Conjuring‘s cinematographer, John R. Leonetti, who directed that film’s hit spinoff, Annabelle.
